Summary[]

The Crimson Magic Village finds itself the target of what appears to be nightly attacks by the Demon King's Army, while in the meantime Megumin wants to journey all the way to Axel in search of the person who taught her Explosion. However, she is unable to get past all the dangerous monsters living around the village alone since she can only fire off one attack before being immobilised, so she needs to look for a job in order to earn the teleportation fee to Arcanletia, from where she can take the carriage to Axel.

Finding a job though proves a challege to Megumin, with Bukkororii telling her to just give up and instead join the guerilla force called "Red-Eye Dead Slayer" he had assembled for fighting the Demon King's army, though Megumin turns it down because Yunyun who is part of it too says that it is actually a vigilante force of village NEETs. As Bukkororii leaves, he tells her that if she needs help with anything except money she can ask him, since both of them are NEETs, something Megumin refuses to accept.

Megumin goes asking for work at the village potion shop, but the owner only offers ingredient gatherer jobs that involve hunting One-Punch Bears, and so she becomes stressed out. Then in the following morning, Yunyun comes accusing Megumin for another Explosion in the woods last night that forced her to join the hunt for the "explosion demon". Initially, Megumin tries to deny the accusation since the villagers thought it was the work of the Demon King's army, but Yunyun shakes out a confession from her about how she goes into the woods at night for Explosions to relieve the stress from unable to find work while Komekko drags her back with a sleigh.

Struggling to find a job, Megumin considers taking up the offer from the potion shop's owner and sell out her young body, to Yunyun's utmost horror, though afterwards Megumin clarifies that she was talking about a job for testing new potions. Yunyun then decides to help Megumin out with seeking work, so they try working as kitchen staff and waitresses as well as harvesters for onions and potatoes, but end up failing on all of them while earning only meagre pay.

Frustrated that she can't earn enough money to leave the village, Megumin invites Yunyun on a "date", in which they go in the woods where Megumin uses Explosion to let off some steam, before Yunyun has to carry her limp body and flee from nearby Fire Drakes that got blasted awake. Tripping over in her haste, Yunyun manages to stop a Fire Drake with Freeze Gust, though they still have to run when more of the reptiles show up. Bukkororri then comes across them as they are taking a breather, so Megumin quickly makes up a story about how she saw the "explosion demon" when they were there leveling up, and following a fierce battle with them the "explosion demon", who Megumin describes as a female demon with really big horns and a hot body, ran away.

Yunyun carries Megumin back home where they agree to look for a job tomorrow before parting, but as Chomusuke cozies up to Megumin when Komekko prepares the bath, a redheaded woman wearing a hooded cloak shows up at her home and expresses interest upon seeing the cat.

Characters[]

Differences to other versions[]

  • The manga omits the parts where Megumin tells Komekko the fairy tale about the lonely hero who defeated the Demon King, the little girl calling her older sister a NEET, and Megumin's failed job interview at Cheekera's shop.
  • After Yunyun's misunderstanding about Megumin "selling out" her body to the potion shop, in the light novel she has a fight with her rival over body proportions.
  • The details of Megumin's job at a restaurant, where by blowing up in response to the tauntings of Funifura and Dodonko, she gets both herself and Yunyun fired, are skimmed over in the manga.
  • The part about the farmers using Advanced Magic for raising crops is omitted in the manga.
  • Unlike how the manga portrays it, the school uniform that Megumin wears gets all scorched and torn after the ordeal with the Fire Drakes in the light novel, where she also tells Bukkororii to finish off the frozen monsters but then has to suppress her annoyance when both him and Yunyun make fun of Explosion Magic.
