Early Life[]
Eris is the immortal Goddess of Luck and Fortune who presides over the world in which the series takes place. As such Eris is the main deity worshiped by the Eris Order, the predominant religion in the Parallel World, and even has the currency named after her.[1] Whenever anyone dies in that world, it is Eris' job to guide them into their next life, whether it be going to Heaven or reincarnating.[2] Yet despite being the most worshiped Goddess in the Parallel World, Eris was still the underling of Aqua whose more fanatical followers give her more power, and would frequently have to take up the work in her senior's place.[3]
Eris often went down to the living world she presides over,[4] both for fun and to seal or retrieve Divine Items gifted to those reincarnated from Japan. But one day, one of her worshipers by the name of Darkness prayed to her, asking for friends to adventure with.[5] Taking pity on Darkness as well as finding her noble status a key to access the high-born's residences if needed, Eris granted the request personally by descending to the world as the Thief Chris on her follower's return from the church. The goddess' avatar Stealing Darkness' purse on their initial meeting, however, saw her apprehended for theft instead, and it was many such attempts later before Darkness finally accepted her as an adventuring companion.[6] She and Darkness thereafter occasionally went on adventures, though Chris didn't reveal her true identity to anyone.[7]
Irregular of Axel Arc[]
After failing to recruit additional members into their party, Chris followed Darkness in searching the forest near Axel for a powerful Demon that the Guild reported sightings of.[8] However, it wasn't until the day following the defeat of the Guild's hunting squadron were they able to encounter Host, during which Chris wounded him while he was distracted by Darkness, before the two of them had to retreat.[9]
Beginner Adventurer Arc[]
Upon hearing of Darkness wishing to join a party led by somebody supposedly to be her ideal pervert despite getting initially rejected, Chris on the next day accompanied her friend to the Guild for a meeting with Kazuma, and offered to teach him some Thief Skills in exchange for bubbly. They later went to an alleyway outside, where Chris demonstrated Lurk for hiding from Darkness whom she threw a stone at, only to have her Enemy Detection inform her of the irritated Crusader heading straight towards the obvious barrel she was hiding in. Chris next showed Kazuma Steal by taking his purse, then after Kazuma learned the three skills challenged him to Steal something off her. Yet despite Chris preparing a handful of stones to reduce the chances of him taking something valuable, she instead got her panties Stolen from her, and to her utmost embarrassment had to buy it back from Kazuma with his purse as well as her own money. The Thief afterwards enacted some payback when she publicised an exaggerated account of what Kazuma did to her for ruining his reputation, before citing a request to help another party of adventurers as an excuse to take her leave.[10]
Chris later returned to Axel, where she helped a young noble trail Dust through taking paparazzi pictures and making a note of the delinquent adventurer's everyday activities,[11] then told Mitsurugi as he was asking all over about Kazuma how the scum went around stealing panties.[12] Yet subsequent to her stealing a purse swindled by a thuggish adventurer so that it could be returned to the beginner adventurer who was the rightful owner, Chris got jumped on by Aqua. Saved by Kazuma who pointed out Aqua's intent of using the theft as an excuse to confiscate the money for herself, the disguised Eris was reminded of a senior goddess of hers who looked and acted the same as the Arch Priest. Chris next discovered in a shop a piece of Devil's King's Blood which was ordered by some noble for cursing an enemy, so upon being told by the shopkeeper to mind her own business, she swiped the cursed gem away, only to be cornered outside by Megumin for shoplifting. Kazuma again showed up to stop the Crimson Demon from using the theft as an excuse for coveting the "cool gem", but this time Chris had to flee alongside him when Megumin thwarted their attempts at retrieving the gem by yelling about being robbed. Grumbling about her uncharacteristically bad luck that day, Chris along with Kazuma hid in an alley using their Lurk, before she feigned Neroid calls to lead the pursuing policemen off, though Kazuma accordingly compared her Stealing his purse upon their first meeting similar to the acts of the thuggish adventurer from earlier. Chris afterwards treated Kazuma to drinks at the Guild, and was telling him of how she usually worked diligently, when Aqua stumbled in hollering about reporting Chris' theft until the Thief treated her too. In the ensuing conversation when the two made up, Chris talked about her unruly senior whom Aqua looked akin to.[13]
Deep Winter Arc[]
Following Kazuma's decapitation by the Winter Shogun, Eris who processed his soul impressed him by how she acted like a true goddess. Yet when she was about to reincarnate Kazuma's soul to start a new life as a baby in Japan, Aqua who had against the rules Resurrected Kazuma's body interrupted them. With the secret of her chests actually being padded used as blackmail, Eris was forced to let Kazuma's soul back into the world of the living.[2] Having to pick up after this breach of protocol, she was unable to provide Kazuma's party assistance as Chris when they headed into Keele's Dungeon.[3]
Chris later on managed to make it back to the Guild, where (in the audio drama) she witnessed a Darkness weakened by the Powerful Messenger,[14] and participated in the meeting against the Destroyer.[15]
Late Winter Arc[]
Chris was summoned by Sena as a witness when Kazuma was tried for treason, where she gave a testimony about him Stealing her panties before being dismissed[16] (and in the anime she again had her panties Stolen by Kazuma following his return from Keele's Dungeon,[17] while Eris had to process Kazuma's soul once more when he got killed by Aqua and other girls following the choker incident[18]).
She subsequently adventured with Darkness as Chris for a while, and (in the audio drama) they investigated the surrounding wilderness of Axel when Megumin was accused by the police for rampant explosions around the area, where they discovered the culprit to be Mine Mushrooms detonated by the magical powers of the daily Explosions.[19] They also took a simple quest against Goblins, which got complicated because Darkness jumped into the way of Chris' Bind and let the Goblins ravage her, forcing Chris to defeat all the Goblins by herself as well as listen to Darkness' perverted ravings afterwards.[20]
At some point during the period, Chris was dining at the Guild when the nearby Dust suddenly blurted out about the supposedly busy goddesses failing in their duties if they descend into the mortal world to become adventurers, shocking the avatar of Eris into choking on her drink.[21]
Early Spring Arc[]
Eris met Kazuma again following his death from a quest against Lizard Runners, though this time he got sick of his troublesome companions and wished to start anew as a baby. During their ensuing conversation, Eris let slip about her sometimes sneaking into the living world, before Kazuma was coerced into returning to his body.[4]
(In the anime, she also had to process Kazuma after he died from having all his flesh melted off his bones by Hans in Arcanletia)[22]
Possibly around that time period, Chris hoping to throw Darkness a surprise birthday party went buying ingredients for a birthday cake, but as she bought flour and sugar from a baker in addition to eggs from a poultry butcher, the Thief noticed Darkness trailing her alongside Kazuma and Aqua, which a subsequent query revealed to be the Crusader worrying about her hanging around unsavoury people, before Aqua correctly guessed the intent of Chris' shopping much to her embarrassment.[23]
Cursed Ring Arc[]
Hearing about a cursed ring stuck onto Kazuma's hand, Chris made her way to his party's mansion, where she was shocked when told by his companions as well as Wiz and Yunyun that it made him Steal panties, though the Thief was eventually persuaded to help Kazuma earn the fee charged by Vanir for getting the ring off.[24]
After Kazuma still stole a panty despite all the girls staying somewhere else for the night, Chris was persuaded by Darkness to comply with Kazuma's idea of earning Vanir's curse removal fee through working at his maid café dressed up as a maid server, where nervous customers were calmed by her soothing manners, though circumstances soon forced it to close.[25]
When the Guild held a Sports Festival that offers a stupendous prize enough to pay the fee, Chris accepted the invitation from Kazuma's party to be part of their team. She consequently joined the team's swimming training at the riverhead lake, though in the process her swimsuit mysteriously came off. On the day of the Sports Festival, Chris during the race across the grasslands stopped a jealous Dust from kicking Kazuma, though the subsequent discovery of Brutal Alligator hatchlings in the lake snapping at the competitors' swimsuits ended up getting the festival cancelled.[26]
Following a discussion during breakfast among the girls over what to do about Kazuma after he Stole panties again, Chris at him suggesting selling light novels proposed writing about a female thief's exploits in the shadows of society before he ended up scrapping the project. With Kazuma settling for making money through starting a singer idol unit, Chris following idol training was assigned to be the curt member of the unit named "Shiny Blue", though it was soon forced to disband due to circumstances.[27]
After Kazuma took a quest to seek stolen antiques in a cave used by thieves as a hideout, Chris along with Yunyun instead reluctantly accompanied him because his party members declined to follow. Following a picnic by the lake, the girls ran into moments of distress when they got caught in a hunting net trap while trekking through the forest, and also inside the cave where they had to crawl through a narrow passageway, which turned out to have a trapdoor that dropped them into a deeper part of the cave system. Successfully defeating a horde of attacking monsters, Chris realised how there was another way out of the cave, only to be shocked when the trio later found a Skull Dragon sleeping close to the exit. Subsequent to them running into Aqua who trailed Kazuma alongside Megumin, Darkness, and Wiz, Chris joined the others as they tried to sneak past the Skull Dragon, and despite it being woken by the ring managed to make it out.[28]
Discussing with Yunyun the idea of infiltrating Kazuma's mansion for retrieving the panties he had Stolen that month until the man in question walked in on them, Chris agreed to help earn the fee through working odd jobs. Several days later when the Skull Dragon was seen making its way towards Axel and had a bounty put onto it, Kazuma having heard from Vanir of its origins assigned Chris to scout out the Skull Dragon's actions in support of the other adventurers intercepting it outside the city. Subsequent to the ensuing deal made with the mage's soul in the Skull Dragon by offering up the Stolen panties and its purification by Aqua, the consequently enraged Chris took part in the beating that killed Kazuma, forcing her to process his soul as Eris before Aqua Resurrected him again.[29]
Following the series of possible rewards and penalties for Kazuma depending on his performance in the "Panty Judgments", Chris while drinking at the Guild might receive an offer to do something for her from an apologetic Kazuma, so she jokingly requested him to pay her 1 million eris before deciding to have him owe her a favour. Chris upon discovering Kazuma tailing her after she headed out, proceeded to lead him in circles throughout town and outside. Yet the next day while visiting Wiz's Shop, a frantic Kazuma burst in telling her of somebody posting a quest in his name promising to pay 1 million eris for her capture. After Wiz tried to serve them drugged tea, Chris was dragged from the shop by Kazuma as Keith and other adventurers discovered them. Sneaking through tight alleyways in awkward positions, the pair made it to Kazuma's mansion, where the awaiting Megumin listened to their explanation and bought time for them to flee from the adventurers barging in. They soon found themselves cornered on the streets, which cumulated in Chris' panties being Stolen by Kazuma and thrown out as a distraction for them to slip away, but Chris became so angry that she pondered letting herself be caught until Kazuma managed to convince her into taking refuge within a church of Eris. As pursuers closed in, however, they were forced to creep through the rooms and onto the roof, during which Chris nearly had her pants ripped off by a slipping Kazuma. Eventually the pair were surrounded outside the church, though subsequent to Chris being infuriated by Kazuma declaring how he would publicly strip her without realising his true intent of letting her flee by herself, they were saved when the time limit of the quest ran out, and accordingly discovered that it was Aqua who posted the quest due to a misunderstanding. Later on, Chris either told Kazuma as he apologised again how he was obliged to help her in future, or while going shopping had him buy her crêpes.[30]
At some point during that period, Eris expressed vexation at Kazuma, who had ran off a cliff in a quest gone wrong, for repeatedly dying, only to have him appearing before her a mere couple of days later due to a monster attack.[31]
Magical Stones Arc[]
Returning to the Guild at Axel following a trip from the royal capital, Chris ran into Kazuma's party while they were discussing about a magical stone that they had recently found, which she identified as a Devil-Sealing Magical Stone. Upon the party's members having different ideas of what to do with it, she pacified their disagreement by citing how the records at the royal capital talked of multiple magical stones existing and sent them into anticipatory celebrations.[32]
Chris afterwards headed off to the royal capital again for researching the records, and found out that there were actually seven of these magical stones in existence, so she accordingly decided to join Kazuma's party in their search following their return from Keele's Dungeon.[33] Subsequent to the magical stone buried in the snowfield forest being blown out of the ground along with a hot spring, Chris also went to take a dip.[34]
When Kazuma's party were preparing to head into the Mystery Tower, she was also present at the Guild hoping to hear from Dust about the rumour of the magical stones being able to grant any wish when all seven are gathered, then upon their return talked of the saying that those magical stones had come from a land called Japan.[35] And when all the stones were gathered following the party's expedition into Shangri-La, Chris informed them how according to the records, those Devil-Sealing Magical Stones need to be brought to an altar on the Island in the Sky for them to grant wishes.[36]
Following many adventures and battles alongside Kazuma, as well as rescuing the party back to Axel in the form of Eris should a party wipe occur, Chris joined him in defending Axel from the attack of the Imitation Dragon, where she in the final stages unleashed Bind under Kazuma's instructions to hold the rampaging monster in place for the killing blows to be made.[37] Later with Kazuma being depressed because the whole ordeal ended up rewarding them with no gain, Chris proceeded to cheer him up, before joining the other adventurers in celebrating their victory at the Guild.[38]
Black Slab Arc[]
Having heard about Kazuma's party being accused by Sena for theft from a nobleman and facing execution unless they make a set of requested clothes, Chris became bewildered at seeing Darkness turned into a sadist who she had witnessed shopping for whips, before she heard from the other members of the party about how Darkness was cursed by a Black Slab that reversed her personality.[39] Many months later, Eris had to handle Kazuma again when he was killed by the clothes that the man in black robes had generated.[40]
After everything was eventually settled with Chris having tested out enough numbers of various clothes, she was commissioned by the Guild to catch an underwear thief. Since Kazuma and Dust were both the prime suspects, Chris exploiting Kazuma's guilt at having repeatedly Stolen her panties lured him into accompanying her tailing of Dust, so that she could keep an eye on both of them at once. Subsequent to some embarrassing moments between them as they followed Dust, at the end of the day when no traces of his involvement in the crime was observed, Chris got permission from Kazuma to stay at his mansion for the night, and snuck into his room to search for any criminal evidence though to no avail. Hearing from Luna the next morning about her underwear being stolen, Chris due to Dust having gone questing focused on observing Kazuma, therefore she spent the whole day with him as well as visited his room that night, yet the Guild's request made her so tired she fell asleep on his bed. Chris woke up the following day in horror before Darkness reassured her that Kazuma didn't do anything while she slept, so she took Kazuma to the Guild for cancelling this tiring job, only to be told of the underwear thief being caught already. Receiving pay for investigating the two suspects anyways, the true scope of her job was then revealed to Kazuma when Dust came up and blurted it all out, causing Kazuma who had misunderstood Chris' actions to be her affection for him Steal her panties out of upset disappointment. In order to make up with Kazuma, Chris agreed to go on a date with him a few days later, wearing the short dress he had generated with the Black Slab.[41]
Mid Spring Arc[]
In the anime, Eris had to process the gory remains of Kazuma after he was blown up alongside Sylvia, at which she threw up on sight.[42]
Invited by Darkness to her party's mansion one day, Chris was told by the heiress that she would attend a banquet on the following day in order to investigate claims of contraband food ingredients being used for gourmet by some noble, before accepting the petition to accompany her while dressed in male clothing. Chris afterwards tried to pet Chomusuke only to be clawed at, so based on the cat only cozying up to Kazuma but disliking Aqua and Darkness, the goddess in disguise proclaimed Chomusuke to be of diabolic origins, though this only raised more questions from Kazuma over why a supposed Thief like her was disliked too. Next teased by Darkness over being more social than she appeared, Chris got Kazuma to help gang up on her, though the heiress' perverted fantasizes after being Binded by the Thief made them both doubt her noble origins. Proceeding to graffiti on Darkness' face at Kazuma's suggestion, she next helped him tickle torture the heiress. Later as dusk fell, Chris became surprised at Kazuma correctly guessing how Aqua and Megumin returned late because they had a disastrously slimy Explosion routine, and couldn't help muttering about her friend being defiled by the party when she enjoyed being seen with her dress all slimied-up.[6]
Dressing herself in a tuxedo, the Thief arrived late to the banquet which was held at a high-end restaurant, where she was surprised to see Darkness' party members also present. When later told about her role of posing as the heiress' boyfriend for warding off suitors, the flat-chested and thoroughly irate Chris pulled her friend's cheeks, then was rendered speechless because instead of Darkness the nobles all had their attention draw to her party members who were busily stuffing themselves on the offered gourmet. Chris herself though soon attracted the attention of many noblewomen, who after hearing her let slip about not being Darkness' boyfriend offered their hands in marriage.[6]
Surprised on the next day to hear Darkness having grabbed a caged Fairy she had found in the restaurant's kitchen back to the party's mansion, Chris began consoling the terrified heiress who felt guilty for committing theft, though her insisting about Eris forgiving the Crusader fell on deaf ears. Later pushing Darkness onto her knees to apologise when visited by the banquet's hosting noblewoman who proclaimed the Fairy as one of her chefs, the avatar of Eris was approached by the freed Fairy who to her shock detected her true identity and prompted her to make excuses to the others. After the hosting noblewoman was exposed to have exploited the Fairy who was legally considered a child, Chris joined Megumin in pursuit of the perpetrator, though the hosting noblewoman shutting herself within her manor later required Darkness' noble status to tackle.[6]
Cursed Relic Arc[]
When following Kazuma's party as well as Yunyun and Mitsurugi on a request by Lundberg to investigate an ancient relic discovered at the research facility beneath his mansion, Chris got caught in its defence response in the form of Level Drain, which reduced them all to Level 1 rookies with no Skills. She managed to escape being buried alive as a result of Megumin's Explosion, and after Kazuma got charged with treason by Sena which forced him to help repair the damaged relic, Chris tagged along to the meeting with Lundberg for discussing the terms of pardon. Later as they listened to Rav explain how he needed some replacement parts only found in dungeons in order to repair the relic, she volunteered to go scout out Arcanletia, where the researcher speculated a dungeon containing one of the parts was located.[43]
Initially puzzled because nobody in the city of water remembered a dungeon nearby despite ancient records indicating its existence, Chris found her answer when witnessing a follower of the Axis Order who called on the "power of Aqua" make daily performances of splitting apart the city's lake, which revealed an underwater temple submerged at its bottom. Rendezvousing with Kazuma's party upon their exit from a product shop in the city, she showed them how the parting of the lake's waters allowed them to approach the temple, before disabling a magical barrier around it so that they could enter. During their search in the west wing, Chris noticed a short sword at the bottom of a pool which she dived in to retrieve, and later noticed how it was actually used for opening up a hidden passageway into the inner sanctum. When the party reached a flooded hall, she and the other girls wearing swimsuits provided by Aqua dived in to search. Chris was accordingly captured alongside Darkness by a surfacing Kraken, and much to her dismay the perverted Crusader took pleasure in it. Subsequent to being freed, she proceeded to help defeat the Kraken after the water was emptied from the hall to leave it weakened, allowing the party to retrieve the Magical Stone of Water they were tasked to find. Then during a dinner back at the Guild for celebrating the discovery of another replacement part, Chris theorised how it was the power of the magical stone that split the lake's waters.[44]
Chris started investigating Lundberg as well as the relic when Kazuma became suspicious of the nobleman's intentions, though she could only turn up a clean record for the former and nothing for the latter.[45]
At some point during the period, Chris found out about a large band of thieves active in the area around Axel having hoarded a lot of unusual goods, so she invited Kazuma to help raid their hideout within the Bottomless Labyrinth while they were out thieving. Despite easily making their way in and successfully grabbing some loot, the pair ran into some returning thieves, against whom Chris had to do most of the fighting because Kazuma was encumbered by his large sack. After returning the stolen goods to their owners, Chris showed Kazuma a damaged handheld gaming console she had picked up at the hideout, so they returned there and defeated a thief to retrieve its controller, although Chris then had to have the console sealed subsequent to Aqua confirming the existence of a curse upon it. As consolation for the disappointed Kazuma, Chris brought him back to the hideout following the capture of the thief band, where they spent the day playing with the gaming consoles discovered in a storeroom before the otherworldly items got confiscated by the Guild.[46]
Following many adventures and battles alongside Kazuma, as well as rescuing the party back to Axel in the form of Eris should a party wipe occur, Chris joined him in defending Axel from the attack of a supergiant Wallavy. At first in charge of scouting out its movements, she next identified the location of Wallavy's core that according to Rav had suffered integral damage already, which eventually allowed Kazuma to get it destroyed despite the Slime's final mutation, though Eris might end up meeting his deceased soul once again depending on the method he had used.[47] Several days later, when all the adventurers who had fought in the battle were drinking at the Guild in celebration, Chris enjoyed the delicious warabi mochi Aqua had cut out from Wallavy.[48]
Late Spring Arc[]
Chris soon returned to her job of retrieving Divine Items, and in the anime greeted Kazuma's party upon their return to Axel following an outing, before swiping the Uchide no Kozuchi carried by Kazuma and running off.[49] Next having heard of the necklace for switching bodies and the stone for randomly summoning monsters purchased by some unknown noble in the royal capital, Chris while covering her face repeatedly infiltrated the residences of various corrupt nobles hoarding rare treasures that she located through Detect Treasure. Despite being unable to locate her objectives, she much like a noble thief would helped herself to the ill-gotten treasures of the nobles,[50] most of which she donated to the local orphanages run by her followers,[51] though she kept a Barrier Breaker for herself.[52]
Eventually targeting Alderp's manor in the capital after a week of avoiding it out of bad premonition, Chris having detected a treasure there as powerful as another one located at the royal castle, infiltrated the building through a broken kitchen window, only to be jumped on and groped by Kazuma, who was on a mission to catch the noble thief. Briefly explaining herself after getting over her trauma, she was about to elaborate the reason for her actions when Kazuma expressed refusal to hear anymore. With other people being attracted by their racket, Chris being warned by Kazuma about the tragic fate awaiting her should she be captured by the lewd Alderp, cast Bind onto him to serve as an excuse for letting her slip away.[50]
Hoping Kazuma's Farsight will be of use during her infiltration of the royal castle, she went looking for him again when he was asleep in the inn his party stayed at, though upon his waking she got groped once more. Although Kazuma still displayed refusal to listen, Chris anyhow managed to explain the reason for her string of heists, though she also kept anything concerning her true identity secret. Getting her detection of a powerful treasure in Alderp's manor dismissed by Kazuma as having detected Aqua's hagoromo, she was again forced to leave once he threatened to Bind her.[50]
Hours later, Eris was faced with the deceased soul of Kazuma, who tried explaining his humiliating death from being gang-bashed by Kobolds during an attack by the Devil King's Army. The goddess though expressed without naming names how upset she became due to him groping Chris, as well as whine over what he did when they first met. She next petitioned him as a goddess to help reclaim the Divine Items, and elucidated how the necklace that can temporarily switch bodies and the stone for randomly summoning monsters require speaking a keyword in order to activate, before instructing Kazuma to hand them over to Aqua for the senior goddess to seal.[53]
Returning to the inn as Chris that night, she discovered Kazuma all alone and weeping in shame over the humiliation he had suffered during the victory banquet at the royal castle. Next told about the necklace discovered around the neck of Princess Iris by Kazuma who still stubbornly rejected her petitions for aid, Chris informed him the horrifying fact about the necklace's effects turning permanent should one person die during the body switch, and further highlighted the seriousness of the situation as she explained the gifting of the necklace to Prince Jatice being a conspiracy to usurp the bodies of the Belzerg royalty. Accordingly dissuading the panicked Kazuma from informing those in power about the threat due to the danger of them coveting the necklace for nefarious ends, the Thief successfully enlisted his help on retrieving the Divine Item from Iris through a castle heist.[53]
With the soldiers all drunk on victory and letting their guard down, Chris covering her face headed for the royal castle alongside Kazuma, whose mask he had put on as part of his thief outfit intrigued her. Briefly arguing over who gets to be the boss of their little thief gang, the goddess of fortune eventually got her way following a rock-paper-scissors match. The boss thus led her assistant towards the castle walls, which he Sniped a rope over for them to scale, before she unlocked an entrance into the castle proper. Next Lurking their way past patrolling soldiers onto the second floor, Chris who wanted to check out the castle's vault in case the Divine Item was there had Kazuma lead the way, and accordingly broke the magic barrier protecting it with her Barrier Breaker. Making their way into the stockpile of rare treasures, the experienced Thief warned Kazuma not to remove anything unnecessary, since doing so will sound the alarm, only to have the whole castle alerted of their presence because Kazuma couldn't keep himself from taking an adult magazine.[52]
(In the anime, the duo was discovered because Chris, who dressed in an outfit that veiled her face, screamed out loud when Kazuma purposefully nudged her breasts while they were Lurking from patrolling soldiers, and neither went to the vault nor fought other adventurers on their way upstairs)[54]
Forced to flee from pursuing soldiers while holding down her exasperation at Kazuma, the boss bought some breathing time by laying a Wire Trap to seal off the corridor behind them. Yet just as she was calling for a retreat, Kazuma contrary to expectations expressed determination to complete the mission despite the odds set against them, and surprised her when he quickly defeated the soldiers who caught up. Trailing her assistant who not only knew the way upstairs towards the princess' bedroom but also steamrolled through the defending soldiers in their path, the boss still couldn't help complaining when he identified themselves as the Silver-Haired Thief Brigade in an attempt to downplay his part in the heist. After Skill Binding some wizards in their way attempting to cast spells at them, Chris upon the pair reaching the second-highest floor sealed off the way downstairs to block enemy reinforcements, only to find themselves faced by Mitsurugi, Claire, Rain, and a band of knights. Taking a mental blow when Mitsurugi mistook her for a boy and Kazuma identified her boyish body as the reason, the boss still recovered subsequent to her assistant defeating the Swordmaster. The two of them proceeded to skillfully Flee from Claire and the other knights' attacks between bands of panicking nobles, with Chris Binding any knight she could in the meantime.[52]
(Chris in the anime called for a retreat when faced with Claire and Rain leading a band of soldiers as they neared Iris' bedroom, then as Kazuma began ploughing down the soldiers, cast Skill Bind on Rain to prevent her from casting attacking spells before Mitsurugi showed up)[54]
Finally making it to the top floor, the boss now low on magical power blocked off the stairwell with one last Wire Trap, but was faced at the doorway to Iris' bedroom by none other than Darkness, who quickly saw through their disguises. Chris and Kazuma therefore loudly talked about the princess wearing a dangerous item that can end up endangering the whole kingdom, which successfully notified Darkness of their intentions and convinced her into secretly aiding their purpose. The thieves though found Aqua defiantly blocking their way, while reinforcements from downstairs began cutting their way through the Wire Trap, so following Chris' plan, the pair dashed past the opening Darkness left for them right into the bedroom. Facing the defencive princess at last, Chris and Kazuma simultaneously Stole something from Iris before escaping through the window into the pool below, just as Aqua cast her sealing powers at the thieves.[52]
Escaping alongside Kazuma back to his inn with the necklace in hand, Chris early in the morning had her head mashed by a furious Darkness and was forced to explain the whole matter, which later prompted her and Kazuma to heap responsibility on the other. Lectured afterwards by Darkness over the huge commotion they had caused, she was ordered to leave at once because of her conspicuous silver hair, before the scratching of her scarred cheek gave away her knowledge of Kazuma having Stolen something else from the princess. Subsequent to Kazuma producing the adult magazine and the engagement ring he had Stolen off Iris' finger, Chris made her way out of the royal capital.[55]
Early Summer Arc[]
Processing Kazuma again after he was eaten by the Kowloon Hydra, Eris for the heck of it taunted him using a game-over line from Dragon Quest, before reporting how his party members managed to escape after Darkness recovered his body, and pleaded him not to blame Darkness for his death because she had her issues behind it. Eris was next asked about her sneaking to the living world, and hinted to Kazuma that she had met him in a different appearance several times already, though his wild guesses about some of her followers who were teased by Keith and Dust over their breast sizes being her cover identity got Eris mad. As Kazuma edged further towards to truth, Eris quickly pushed him back upon hearing Aqua declare her Resurrection on Kazuma's body completed.[56]
A week later, she processed Dust's deceased soul because he too got eaten by the Kowloon Hydra, and expressed exasperation at his ignorant ranting about the situation. Eventually explaining how he had already died, the goddess proceeded to scold the delinquent over his lifetime of disreputable deeds, yet became shocked upon flicking through the records of his life prior to arrival at Axel, which detailed enough noble exploits for him to reincarnate as a baby or ascend to Heaven. Soon letting Dust back to the world of the living because Aqua cast Resurrection on his body, Eris became piqued by him asking right before return if her breasts are real.[57]
Eventually making her way back to Axel as Chris, the Thief immediately headed for Alderp's mansion, in the basement of which she uncovered the stone for randomly summoning monsters. After sealing the Divine Item and throwing it into the lake formerly inhabited by the Kowloon Hydra, Chris met up with her assistant at some lonely coffee shop, and was told all about the recently disappeared Alderp's attempt at forcibly marrying Darkness getting thwarted by Kazuma. Consequently scratching her scarred cheek while responding to his inquiries regarding her whereabouts ever since they parted ways at the royal capital with vague descriptions of her other job which involved dead people, she tried asking for his help at retrieving other Divine Items. Proceeding to leave after being promptly rejected, Eris was next asked about what she did with the Divine Item retrieved from Alderp, a question Chris naturally answered, before the realisation that she had just revealed her true identity to Kazuma hit her.[58]
Failing to come up with credible excuses as Kazuma pointed out how she respectfully referred to Aqua and made the same cheek-scratching motion as Eris, Chris had to admit about her double identity, before interrupting Kazuma's apologies over all the embarrassing sexual harassments he had committed on her. She proceeded to explain her goal of retrieving Divine Items as well as fulfilling Darkness' wish for a friend, and expressed exasperation at him liking both of her identities. Next asking for his help with retrieving the sacred armour Aigis, Chris managed to secure his assistance by pleading in the manner of Eris.[7]
Later hearing Luna vent out all the stresses encountered in her occupation when Dust tried inviting her on a trip to Arcanletia with a free stay ticket, the Thief went and successfully asked for the one last ticket that the delinquent still hadn't gifted out,[59] so that she could go investigate rumours about the city's main spring sprouting water with healing and exorcising properties.[60]
Deciding not to take a carriage ride with the others going on the trip, Chris met up with Dust during dusk of the day he arrived at Arcanletia, just as he was being harassed by an Axis follower trying to convert him. Consequently becoming the target of attempted conversion, she proceeded to identify herself as an Eris follower and caused the Axis follower to storm away in disgust, then asked Dust to serve as her bodyguard. Her religious affiliation though was soon used by the delinquent for warding off the Axis followers who enacted all kinds of ludicrous conversion schemes on them, which attracted scorn and stones in addition to shouts about Eris' breasts being padded, the final being something that the goddess in disguise tried her best not to hate Aqua for.[60]
Barred entry by a pair of knights standing guard at the gate leading up to the main spring, Chris was told about the waters gushing from there turning into holy water after the battle against Hans, and expressed relief at the knights' identity as Eris followers. Considering her investigations complete, the Thief went to reward Dust with dinner, only to be dismayed when the restaurant staff who identified Chris' religious affiliation gifted her some chest pads. Then on the way back to the inn Dust was staying at, Chris became embarrassed with some drunkards' ranting about wishing to marry Eris, before getting mad at them criticising her padded chest, though the Thief's spirits were lifted when Dust preferred Eris over Aqua.[60]
Chris on the next day approached the group after the others on the trip suffered a morning of traumatising harassment from the Axis followers' conversion attempts, and hoping to improve the status of Eris followers in Arcanletia in addition to exacting payback for being said to pad her chest, she petitioned for her companions' help with changing the city. Although her pleas were initially met with disinclination, once she talked about a possible investigation into some lewd books that the Eris followers in Axel were suspecting to be circulated by the Axis Order, Dust for some reason volunteered his party to help her endeavour.[60]
Surprised by Dust later coming up with a costume of Eris, Chris nevertheless put it on and calmed Rin's fears about them committing sacrilege. Subsequent to Dust explaining his plan of letting her perform great deeds in the guise of Eris for elevating the status of Eris followers, however, the reminders from Keith and Yunyun regarding the dire consequences should the fanatically hostile Axis followers see an "impersonation" of Eris unnerved the avatar, until Dust decided to scrap the plan.[60]
Suddenly hearing the Axis followers outside clamouring about a Demon at the fountain plaza, the avatar of the Demon-hating goddess immediately joined their rush towards the location, where she found Vanir alongside Lolisa on a stage. Unable to discern whether or not he is a real Demon in her mortal shell, Chris upon Vanir pushing out photobooks of Aqua for sale and her other travelling companions all helping out with the selling, silently headed back towards the inn. But moments later, she found her travelling companions pursued by a mob of furious Axis followers, which Chris in her Eris outfit had to flee from too because they named her the mastermind, though thanks to Dust splitting off and leading the mob to him, she successfully escaped back to the inn.[60] With her other work needing to be done following the tiring trip, Chris afterwards decided not to join her companions on their carriage trip back to Axel.[61]
Mid Summer Arc[]
The Thief during a visit to her assistant's mansion publicised her mission of retrieving Divine Items, all the while feeling curious about a doll looking just like Vanir that was cuddling the newborn Emperor Zel. After Darkness and Aqua declined helping because of some new duties calling, the avatar of Eris became embarrassed once the subject changed to the upcoming Eris Appreciation Festival where people dress up as the Goddess of Fortune, before she turned flabbergasted by her senior proclaiming intent to replace it with an "Aqua Appreciation Festival". Explaining to Kazuma how Aqua used to pile work with her before making a show of helping, Chris was consequently shocked by Aqua declaring her as an accomplice to the Goddess of Water's endeavour.[7]
Later uncovering Aigis to be in the hands of Undyne, who was bound to refuse parting with it and required a heist on his mansion, the avatar of Eris went meeting Kazuma at the coffee shop to convey her findings, only to hear that he had talked the shopping district's festival committee into allowing for simultaneous festivals appreciating both her and Aqua. Deeply troubled because she behaviourally cannot refuse her senior's requests to help in a rival festival even if it may see her own festival cancelled, Chris couldn't help feeling skeptical when Kazuma consoled her by citing how the double festivals were simply for cheering people up.[62]
She eventually struck Undyne's manor with Kazuma one night at a time that the former NEET determined to be the best, though Chris unable to see in the dark had to warn him from sexually harassing her through threats of divine retribution. Expressing curiosity at the magic item store employee who gave her assistant his mask, Chris disabled the warning trap outside the treasure vault, though she was unable to find the armour among the treasures inside, until Kazuma opened a secret door leading to a hidden chamber where they discovered their objective bound in chains. Yet upon touching the battered suit of armour, the boyish Thief was surprised to learn that Aigis could talk. Soon becoming irate because the sacred armour not only called her a "boy", but also arrogantly demanded being worn by a beautiful woman, she proceeded to bash it before being stopped by Kazuma. Then once revealing how the Japanese reincarnate to whom she planned to gift Aigis will likely be male, Chris was forced to flee since the suit of armour sounded the alarm by bellowing about being kidnapped.[62]
When the first day of the festival finally commenced, the avatar of Eris was asked by her senior to manage a stall for lucky draw at the area allocated to the Axis followers, much to her dismay. Forced to repeatedly earn money for the Axis Order from people trying out their luck that was unsurprisingly feeble against the Goddess of Fortune, Chris became spent by the time Kazuma with Aqua in tow toured her stall at dusk, and further burst into tears when a follower of hers who experienced a losing streak stomped off while cursing Eris. Anyhow cheered up when Kazuma opened a food stall selling various Japanese foods and snacks, the Thief helped prepare the ingredients which he used for Cooking, though in the process she couldn't help taking some bites without his permission.[63]
On the third night of the festival when the annual fireworks event and extermination against insect monsters were going on, Chris caught Kazuma while he was helplessly running around alone, and forced him to help with another attempt on Aigis that night. He however rendezvoused with her two hours later than scheduled because a sexily-dressed Darkness came to kiss him despite his relationship with Megumin, and the flustered avatar of Eris upon further inquiries heard his scummy intent of raising flags with other girls. Accordingly heading to Undyne's manor, with Chris carrying a magic cloth for silencing Aigis, they discovered that despite it being the third day of the festival, the security details which had strengthened ever since their prior failed attempt was still quite strong. She was subsequently startled by the appearance of Megumin, which soon turned to vexation because Kazuma while giving the Crimson fangirl of them an inspiring summary over their righteous mission, introduced the pair as being the "Masked Thief Brigade".[64]
The thieves proceeded to enact a gig for making Megumin keep quiet about their heist, before Chris snatched away the fan letter offered by the fangirl, much to her assistant's annoyance. Consequently exasperated at Kazuma hoping to go develop relations with Megumin instead of completing the job, the boss forced him to Lurk alongside her towards the entrance. Upon her assistant recklessly silencing a pair of guards talking about the festival by touching them, Chris while curious over the identity of the festivities' scummy mastermind, went on to warn Kazuma against two-timing with Megumin and Darkness.[64]
Once more entering the hidden chamber containing Aigis where her assistant activated a sound-blocking barrier, the boss began unwrapping the magic cloth for containing the armour as soon as Kazuma removes the chains binding it down, though his childish taunts aimed to horrify Aigis made her speechless. Accordingly shocked by the unchained Aigis moving on its own volition and proclaiming intent to go seek a beautiful woman as master, the Thief offered to wear it, only to be rejected for being too boyish. Next failing to Bind the sacred armour because of its immunity to skills, she tried holding the exiting Aigis back though to no avail. The avatar of Eris therefore confessed her divine identity in hopes of persuading the sacred armour, but was instead mocked for being delusional in addition to possessing small breasts, much to Chris' embarrassed rage. With the alarm raised once Aigis dashed outside the vault and fled from the manor, the boss reluctant to expend the specially-ordered wire she brought along for escaping in fear of being tracked made to help tackle the oncoming guards, until the Explosion launched outside by Megumin stunned the manor's residents and let the thieves slip away.[64]
Although the Silver-Haired Thief Brigade managed to escape from their pursuers into an inn room used as their hideout, on the following morning they were approached by a furious Darkness. Caught and tied up by her friend, Chris begged for Kazuma who had shut himself inside the room to surrender only to have her assistant propose letting the Crusader enact his share of punishment upon his boss, infuriating Chris so much she volunteered to help Darkness pry the door open and tie him up. After a scolding over their theft which caused a commotion in the city, something the thieves brought up more excuses for, Chris had her temples mashed for refusing to stop stealing, then became shocked by Kazuma who while getting his head mashed blurted out all the intimate acts that he and Darkness had went through, which resulted in her being freed by the embarrassed Crusader. Chiding Darkness for hiding all the details of her relationship with Kazuma, the avatar of Eris was subsequently thunderstruck by the news of the Axis Order calling for the city to hold only the Aqua Appreciation Festival next year.[64]
While cleaning up at the local church of herself, Chris heard from Kazuma how his confrontation with Aqua at the church of the Axis Order bore no fruit due to her senior getting snobbish from the Axis followers successfully attracting more festival revelers than the Eris followers. She proceeded to become dejected at the failures of her followers in holding festivities, before condemning her own failure in retrieving Aigis. Then to the Goddess of Fortune's surprise, Kazuma asked Eris to descend upon the mortal world in her divine form during a beauty pageant run by the Eris Order on the final day of the festival, so that not only will the people's faith in the Eris Appreciation Festival get reignited, but the lewd sacred armour may also be lured out before it leaves Axel.[65]
With her and Kazuma positioning themselves at the back of the pageant grounds where they could observe the audience too, the two of them watched as contestants began presenting themselves on stage, before Chris went off to buy cold drinks in anticipation of a long wait. She however returned to see Kazuma together with Aigis goading Darkness who had gone onstage to strip naked, and proceeded to reprimand them for inciting her friend into attacking the audience. Futilely trying to dissuade the sacred armour from joining the fray and clobbering it when Aigis insulted goddesses, Chris as the audience began dispersing heard them talk about have only the Axis Order hold the festival next year because they did a better job than the Eris Order, sending her into the depths of downheartedness, until Kazuma secured Aigis' assistance with helping Eris out.[65]
Reverting to her divine form, the Goddess of Fortune stepped onstage just before the announcer was about to announce the pageant winner, and drove the audience into jubilant fervour. Eris consequently tried to handle the crowds when they all swamped the stage pleading for a handshake and blessing, to the point she came under the danger of being overwhelmed. Soon rescued by Kazuma from a zealot persistently grabbing onto her hand, she was allowed refuge inside the interior of Aigis, which turned out to be a furnace because of the sacred armour standing in the sun. As the mob furiously turned on her assistant and the armour for hiding away their goddess, Eris tried to stay and help Kazuma who drew attention to himself, but was in the end taken away by Aigis.[65] Eventually running off to a safe spot, the Goddess of Fortune promised to gift the sacred armour to a Sword Master which it preferred.[66]
Following the conclusion of the festival, Chris also participated in the closing party held by the festival committee, where she heard from Darkness about Kazuma being the mastermind of having the two religious orders' festivals compete with one another on top of other scummy festivity ideas. Next blurting out how the heiress didn't invite her party members to her birthday party, the avatar of Eris slipped out onto the streets with Kazuma so they could exchange tidings, and became relieved to hear of the Eris Appreciation Festival to be held again next year now that her advent had made Axel into a holy city of her order.[66]
Accordingly amused to hear passers-by fervently discuss the event, Chris picked up the "Chris" flowers dropped by some little sisters who bumped into her, and was delighted to hear of their father praising Eris because she gave them the strength the resist the Devil King's Army. After being gifted one of the flowers for being an adventurer tasked with protecting the city, the Thief was nevertheless shocked when the sisters mistook her to be a boy. Rebuking Kazuma's teasings over what he had learned about her during the interchange, Chris anyhow thanked him for all he did.[66] The pair afterwards struck Undyne's manor again for more treasures as part of the Silver-Haired Thief Brigade.[67]
Late Summer Arc[]
The Thief was shocked one day when scouted by Megumin to join her band of bandits established for supporting the very same thief brigade Chris was part of, especially with one of the members turning out to be Princess Iris under the guise of "Illis". Rendered speechless at becoming the lackey in a bandit band that was a subsidiary to the thief brigade which she was the boss of, Chris was asked for information about the former Dragon Knight Lain Sheyka, at which she quickly pointed them to Dust, though the drunken delinquent's unsteady steps rendered her explanation of his spearwielding stride laughable.[68]
Tailing Dust as he brought Yunyun out into the streets, Chris and the others continued observing him after the loner stomped off, in the meantime of which the avatar of Eris who was certain about her evaluation of people reinstated to Megumin her utter hatred of everything undead and demonic, while finding nothing wrong with Wiz and Vanir. She soon became impressed by the delinquent selflessly extracting recyclable refuse from an unsorted rubbish pile, until he kicked the remaining rubbish all over the place in frustration over receiving little money from selling the recyclables. Further witnessing him perform more acts of scumminess that she initially misunderstood as nobleness, the avatar of Eris finally jumped at him when he tried to extract money from one of her priest followers with a distorted account of his meeting with the goddess during his death.[68]
Forced to treat Dust for a meal afterwards at the Guild where he talked about her panties getting Stolen by Kazuma, Chris denied his claims of Eris being fond of him. Subsequent to Iris being taken back home by Claire and the escape of Dust whom she pondered was the wrong lead, the avatar of Eris discussed with Megumin the topic of their own secrets, and irked the Crimson Demon with a vague description about her secret relationship with Kazuma, before both of them retired for the day.[68]
The number of aspiring recruits consisting of powerful individuals who vied for membership in the bandit band alarmed Chris to the scale this supposed "supporting band" had achieved during an ensuing assembly at their base which turned out to be a gorgeous mansion, prompting her to verify with the band leader that she didn't tell Kazuma about the details of their operations. Next facing Cecily's hostility because of her guise as an Eris follower, the Thief ignored Yunyun's inquiries about Iris' identity.[69]
She was on the following day approached at the Guild by Megumin inquiring about which noble household to raid, so frantically covering up the fact that she did previously break into nobles' residences to the point of swearing by Eris, Chris advised her to select small-fry nobles who won't make a big deal of the matter. Next asked about what she wants, the avatar of Eris gave a vague elucidation of her usually being the one who gives what people want, as well as herself doing what she is wanting to do, though this made Megumin mistake her to be like the Axis followers, prompting Chris to quickly clarify herself as pure. The ensuing inquiries about her relationship with Kazuma further drove the brigade boss into making more excuses, before the Crimson Demon's confession of loving Kazuma to the point of eliminating potential rivals both impressed and scared her.[69]
Subsequently visiting the mansion base after investigating the nobles of House Bellheim for any wrongdoing, the avatar of Eris found herself preached at by a Cecily attempting to convert her into the Axis faith. She was at the ensuing assembly reminded by Megumin what the bandit band was established for, before suggesting that they strike House Bellheim despite lacking evidence of its wrongdoings because Cecily reported that household to have refused donating to the Eris Order, though Megumin vetoed her idea.[69]
Chris anyhow went investigating more nobles for possible leads to the lost Divine Items, and uncovered reports about powerful monsters sighted near a forest manor of House Donnelly close to the Kowloon Hydra's lake. Concerned that the stone for randomly summoning monsters, which she later pondered relocating to somewhere safer only to discover it already taken away by somebody, to be potentially involved, the avatar of Eris reported about the matter at the band assembly on the following day, which successfully persuaded Megumin into calling for a raid on House Donnelly.[69]
Accompanying the band to check out the manor only to be surprised at seeing a horde of monsters laying siege to it, Chris agreed with Cecily's suggestion of laying in wait first, though the Thief's purpose of waiting till the defenders are desperate enough to use the Divine Items got interpreted as her cold-bloodedly planning to demand them hand it over once the band jumps to the rescue. She anyhow became impressed by Megumin proclaiming in adventurer style their intervention, and helped deal with the straggler monsters in the aftermath of the ensuing Explosion. The ungrateful response of Karen to their rescue, however, stirred up further suspicion from Chris, so pacifying the other outraged band members, the Thief marked that manor as a target for the Silver-Haired Thief Brigade.[69]
At some point during the period, the avatar of Eris was coerced by Cecily into the awkward position of helping preach the Axis Order around Axel after the Priest cited Eris' advent worsening the environment of local Axis followers. Witnessed by Megumin in the process, Chris was then forced to enact a gig on the streets where she played the part of an "evil Eris follower" trying to attack Chomusuke, which as a result rendered her reputation to tatters among the onlookers who included Kazuma and Darkness.[70]
