Synopsis[]

It is not strange that the Demon Lord's forces fear the Crimson Demons, the clan from which Megumin and Yunyun originate. Even if the Demon Lord's generals attack their village, the Crimson Demons can just easily brush them off with their supreme mastery of advanced and overpowered magic.

When Yunyun receives a seemingly serious letter regarding a potential disaster coming to her hometown, she immediately informs Kazuma Satou and the rest of his party. After a series of wacky misunderstandings, it turns out to be a mere prank by her fellow demon who wants to be an author. Even so, Megumin becomes worried about her family and sets out toward the Crimson Demons' village with the gang.

There, Kazuma and the others decide to sightsee the wonders of Megumin's birthplace. However, they soon come to realize that the nonsense threat they received might have been more than just a joke.

Plot[]

Kazuma, Darkness, Aqua, and Megumin return in shame to the Adventurer's Guild after the Archmage wiped out large quantities of tuna that the adventurers loved. Also shamed by several women nearby as a pervert, Kazuma becomes depressed until Yunyun arrives and asks to bear his child, much to his excitement.

Everyone returns to the party's mansion, where Megumin and Darkness implore Yunyun to reconsider as Kazuma shamelessly pulls his pants down. Yunyun thus explains that she received a letter from her father claiming the entire Crimson Demon Village had been wiped out by the Devil King's Army, and according to prophecy only a son between Yunyun and a "lowly" adventurer can avenge them. Megumin however points out a footer which indicates that the prophecy portion is simply a fiction penned by Arue, which got sent in the same envelope as the chief's letter, so the embarrassed Yunyun returns to the village, and Aqua pulls Kazuma's pants back up.

Megumin too decides to check in on the village, therefore following a visit to Wiz's Shop where Aqua and Vanir have a confrontation, Wiz Teleports them most of the way. They however land near female Orcs gathering in a clearing on the path leading to the village, who chase down and molest Kazuma until Yunyun arrives to free him with Bottomless Swamp. While Aqua comforts Kazuma's traumatised soul as Megumin and Yunyun squabble, Goblins working for the Devil King discover them due to Kazuma loudly demanding to know where Yunyun's tattoo is.

Megumin swiftly casts Explosion, wiping out the first wave of Goblins, which is followed by another horde running from several Crimson Demons including Bukkororii and Soketto, who saw the explosion and annihilate the monsters with multiple Lights of Saber. The party is accordingly Teleported to the village, only to find it perfectly intact, since Yunyun's father Hiropon had in fact grossly exaggerated the danger. He proceeded to show the visitors that despite Sylvia, one of the Devil King's Generals, being present, the Crimson Demons' magic easily repelled all of the Devil King's Army's attacks.

The party afterwards arrive at Megumin's home, where Komekko welcomes them. Megumin's poor parents Hyoizaburoo and Yuiyui though are under the impression that Kazuma and Megumin are lovers due to Megumin mentioning in her letters that he leaves her covered in goo, tries to get a feel of her breasts while carrying her, bathes with her, and sneaks peeks up her skirt. They however become more agreeable towards this, once Kazuma let slip about how he lives in a mansion and is expected to receive 300 million eris through Vanir. After nightfall, Yuiyui makes the others Sleep and locks Kazuma in Megumin's room in the hopes that Kazuma will make a move. However, Megumin tricks Kazuma into admitting his desire, following which she runs away via the window to Yunyun's house.

The next day, following being called names by his party during breakfast, Kazuma apologises for coming on to Megumin. With Darkness later heading out alone for her personal business, Megumin takes Kazuma and Aqua sightseeing around the village's tourist attractions, including a Mysterious Facility used for sealing the Crimson Demons' "nemesis". At Chekera's clothing shop, Kazuma and Aqua notice the magic cloaks Megumin had ordered being hung out to dry on a "legendary pole" looking just like a rifle. Megumin next leads them to her school Red Prison, where joined by her old classmates Yunyun, Arue, Funifura, and Dodonko, they don their school uniforms and talk about their school days.

On their way back, Megumin recounts how Yunyun graduated with only Intermediate Magic because she spent her points early to save Komekko from monsters. The Devil King's Army at that moment attacks again, this time close to Megumin's home. They immediately hurry over there alongside a band of Crimson Demons, where Darkness is holding back against Sylvia and her soldiers. Emboldened by the Crimson Demons beside him, Kazuma brags about how his party defeated Vanir, Beldia, Hans, and the Destroyer, though he identifies himself as Kyouya Mitsurugi in fear of reprisal, and successfully prompts Sylvia into ordering a retreat as the Crimson Demons fire upon them.

That night, Yuiyui who put the others to sleep again locks Kazuma in with Megumin once more. The two of them wake up in the middle of the night freezing with cold, and have a heart-to-heart which turns sour when Megumin notices that Kazuma Froze over the windows to make the room cold and get her to snuggle with him. She thus retaliates by taunting him over his lacking the will to actually have sex, before inviting him to make a move on her.

Sylvia attacks again at that moment, infuriating Kazuma so much he charges straight at her, only to be easily captured by the busty general who realised that he isn't Mitsurugi. After Aqua gathers his party, Sylvia starts asphyxiating Kazuma between her breasts much to his excitement, thus he demands his companions promise him sexual favours in exchange for his allowing them to rescue him. He changes his mind when his anus is penetrated, making him realise that Sylvia is a transsexual Growth Chimera.

Fainting from the shock, the traumatised Kazuma wakes up to find himself kidnapped by Sylvia to a locked door beneath the Mysterious Facility, behind which lies the Mage-Killer said to be capable of nullifying all magic. Hoping to access the weapon, Sylvia tires to open the door to the storage with Barrier Breaker but fails, following which Kazuma unwittingly reveals his ability to read the Japanese instructions on the door's console. Under threats of Sylvia pleasuring him, he quickly enters the code to unlock the door. Once Sylvia walks inside, however, he closes the door and locks her within. Later as his companions along with Bukkororii and Soketto arrive, Kazauma tells them he plans to starve Sylvia to death.

To their surprise, Sylvia manages to activate the Mage-Killer by melding the serpentine weapon into her body. Bursting out of the facility, she goes on to raze the Crimson Demon Village while her soldiers cheer at the sight. Evacuated to a hilltop with his companions and other villagers, Kazuma who feels guilty at causing all this takes Aqua and Megumin towards some ancient ruins which Arue says may contain clues for countering the Mage-Killer. In the meantime, Darkness heads off to save Megumin's family, Hiropon leads the villagers into counter-attacking, and Wiz takes Vanir to visit her main supplier Hyoizaburoo only to be shocked to see the village in flames.

At the ruins, Kazuma discovers a slab with Japanese inscriptions left by the Head Researcher, which describe how he created the clan of genetically modified red-eyed supermages that he named the "Crimson Demons", as well as the Mage-Killer and the "Railgun (TBD)" to counter the Mage-Killer. Meanwhile, Hiropon and some villagers attack the Devil King's Army, but Sylvia shields a group of her soldiers, before activating Ancient Dispel to deprive the mages of their ability to use magic.

The villagers run as the Devil King's Army sets off in pursuit, with Funifura and Dodonko soon caught up, but Yunyun saves them when she buries the pursuing soldiers under a landslide. As Yunyun distracts Sylvia by issuing a challenge, Kazuma having taken the Railgun from Chekera's shop sets its sights on the Chimera. However, the magical power Aqua infused into it isn't enough for the weapon to operate. Megumin next casts Explosion at Sylvia, but the power is instead absorbed by the Railgun. All seems lost until Komekko points out that the Railgun is now filled to capacity, and fires it before Kazuma can do so, which punches a hole through Sylvia.

Finding herself in the river to the afterlife, Sylvia resists Beldia and Hans who try dragging her to join them, and is resurrected as a monstrous amalgam of the Mage-Killer, Beldia, and Hans. It launches a flood of corrosive slime at Kazuma's party, which nearly overwhelms them until Wiz freezes it with Cursed Crystal Prison. Vanir next reads the situation from Kazuma's mind, followed by Sylvia/Hans/Beldia calling him and Wiz turncoats, and shrug off Vanir's dolls as well as Wiz's magic attacks.

At this moment, Kazuma recalls Sylvia being fond of him, so as Darkness possessed by Vanir holds Sylvia at bay, and Wiz goes asking the Crimson Demons for their magical powers, he has Aqua repeatedly Bless him. His near-encounters with Yunyun, the Orcs, Megumin, and Sylvia having led him to believe that he is on a romantic winning streak, Kazuma then professes his love for Sylvia, allowing himself to be absorbed into her. Wiz accordingly transfers the enormous amounts of magical power to Yunyun and Megumin, so with a Light of Saber powered by Explosion, they pierce Sylvia's barrier that she relaxes when Kazuma sweet-talks her, and obliterate the both of them.

Reduced to a pile of gory remains that made Eris throw up, Kazuma is afterwards Resurrected from them, which is possible because of Aqua's repeated Blessings upon him beforehand. He later returns to Axel with his party, where people give him a hearty welcome at the Guild. When the party goes for a picnic, Megumin feels guilty about being a burden with only one Skill, one which killed Kazuma. She therefore asks him to make her learn Advanced Magic on her Adventurer Card, yet Kazuma instead upgrades her Explosion. An overjoyed Megumin proceeds to cast a mightier Explosion, resulting in a heart-shaped smoke signal of hope for the clear blue sky.

Differences to other versions[]

  • In the light novel, Yunyun declares her intent to have Kazuma's child right after his return from Arcanletia instead of in the Guild long afterwards.
  • The party's day-long trek on foot from Arcanletia to the village in the light novel, which includes the Tranquility Girl encounter, is completely omitted from the movie.
    • The scene between Kazuma and Megumin by the campfire and the encounter with the Tranquility Girl were afterwards adapted into a later episode in Season 3.
  • While the common foot soldiers of the Devil King's army were described to look like Oni in the light novel, in the movie they were replaced by horned Goblins.
  • Soketto is not part of Bukkororii's vigilantes in the light novel.
  • The Crimson Demon Village in the movie is shown to be much larger and nicer than what the light novel illustrates.
  • The part in the light novel about Bukkororii and his fellow vigilantes playing tricks on Yunyun before being chased off by Aqua soon after their arrival at the village was omitted from the movie.
  • While giving Kazuma and Aqua a tour of the village, Megumin doesn't explain the different landmarks other than the Mysterious Facility as she does in the light novel, instead opting for a montage in the movie.
  • The Mysterious Facility where the Head Researcher made his creations and the Underground Warehouse where he sealed them are two adjacent but separate locations in the light novel, while in the movie the warehouse is built right under the facility.
  • Red Prison is a totally anime-original remodel of the simple unnamed school in the light novel. Therefore, the part where Megumin shows around her school with her old classmates occurs only in the movie.
  • The Head Researcher's notes take the form of his diary left inside the Underground Warehouse in the light novel, while in the movie they are inscribed on a slab at a separate ruin.
  • Sylvia is fully killed when hit by the "Railgun (TBD)" in the light novel, so the battles in the movie subsequent to that are all anime-original additions.
  • The scenes in the light novel where everyone starts giving Yunyun praise after the battle with Sylvia, the reconstruction of the village utilising Stone Golems and Demons, and the third night that Megumin and Kazuma spend together, were all omitted in the movie.
  • In the light novel, Kazuma choosing to have the strongest explosive wizard occurs on a plain outside the Crimson Demon Village instead of Axel.

Trivia[]

  • At the first and second week of screening, the short stories By the demure of the Crimson Demons! and Three Rounds with the S-Level Adventurer were respectively handed out to the audience as special gifts. These were later included in the special booklets that came with the limited edition of the movie's Blu-ray disc.
  • Some of the flashback scenes about Megumin's school days in the Movie differ from their depiction in the later Explosion spinoff television series.
