Early Life[]
Born as the second daughter of the impoverished Hyoizaburoo and Yuiyui, who were rarely at home and left her in the care of her older sister Megumin, Komekko spent her infant years starving and always scraping around for any edible morsels, making her see all sorts of critter found in the countryside surrounding the Crimson Demon Village, ranging from crayfishes in the river to cicadas in the forest, as ingredients for meals.[1][2]
School Days Arc[]
When accompanying Megumin back from fishing for crayfishes at the river one day, Komekko became impressed at her sister sharing one of their catches with Yunyun who was said to look hungry. Returning to their home to find Hyoizaburoo and Yuiyui there after a profitable business trip, the little girl was overjoyed at the sukiyaki pot they were treated to, and became excited at seeing Megumin posing in her new uniform.[2] Komekko though found herself for the most part alone by herself thereafter when Megumin headed off to attend school and her parents left on business trips, and so spent the free time scouring the nearby forests for grub, though at times Megumin would return with actual food for her.[3]
On one hot summer afternoon, Komekko accompanied Megumin to the river for catching crayfishes in preparation for the snowy days that the villagers would conjure tomorrow, and after returning home brought out the frogs she had caught earlier in the day for dinner. The following morning, she and Megumin happily played in the snow accumulated on the yard, until Yunyun arrived to take Megumin to school. Then on the first day of the ensuing early summer vacation, Komekko followed Megumin to Demon's Hill for harvesting wild Tomatoes, before pitting the vegetables they captured against the Onions that Nerimaki had been harvesting in the area, though the weeping magic cast upon them by the Onions made their eyes sore. Leaving the Yunyun they ran into the next day behind, the sisters loitered around Nerimaki's family pub for people who would treat them to a meal, until Arue came up to tempt Komekko through food into selling Megumin out to become her spelling-checker for her novel manuscripts. Trapped indoors for the next two days because of thick snow, two more days later the sisters went out to gather fish blown ashore by the Great Spirit of the Storm. As snow began accumulating again, the sisters went to Arue's home where Komekko was treated to a meal again. They later spent the following weeks heading to Demon's Hill for harvesting wild vegetables whenever food ran out and heading to Arue's home whenever she needed help, up until the end of summer vacation.[4]
Subsequent to school restarting, in accordance with Megumin's teachings about Crimson Demons ignoring warnings against approaching forbidden locations, Komekko searched the village's "tourist attractions" for anything fun to play with. Yet one day as she approached the Tomb of the Dark God which was a frequent spot for her to hang out, Komekko noticed a "big goblin", who identified himself as Host the high-ranked demon working for Wolbach, struggling at the Tomb with a puzzle that she liked to fiddle with, at which the little girl quickly solved it.[5]
Enlisted through food by the impressed Host, Komekko proceeded to play with the puzzle, though on some days she lazed about subsequent to eating her fill.[6] Over the span of several days, she managed to solve one puzzle only to have another more difficult one appear, making her feel tired of playing the game, though Komekko eventually agreed to continue fiddling with it when Host took her into the forest where he hunted for food, following which Komekko in response to his dare charged a sloth of One-Punch Bears that the Demon had to rescue her from.[7]
Finally solving all of the puzzles, the little girl and the Demon were shown an inscription instructing them to offer up a sacrifice consisting of a hen and her child for awakening the sealed half of Wolbach, which Host described as a big, black beast. Given money by Host to buy the sacrifice from the village, Komekko instead returned with a chicken-and-egg rice bowl[8] (which in the anime was actually Bukkororii's lunch that got snatched away by the little girl when he wasn't looking)[9]. She was subsequently left behind after Host flew off for many days in search of something proper to sacrifice, and enjoyed chicken-and-egg rice bowl he allowed her to eat. A black beast looking like a little cat with wings, however, accordingly emerged from the bushes and went for the rice, which Komekko vigourously defended. Managing to defeat and subdue the critter by biting her on the head, Komekko brought the little cat back home,[8] where she proudly showed Megumin their "dinner". Komekko continued to play by herself while Megumin brought the cat she later named "Kuro" to school the next day, and upon her sister's return vaguely revealed how she had been playing with a toy she found outside every day.[3]
Finding Kuro left behind at home on the day after, Komekko subsequent to receiving a purchase order the visiting Wiz left behind, decided to place the cat inside a cooking pot in preparation for Megumin to cook her dinner, and became impressed with her sister's wisdom when told not to eat Kuro until they fattened her up. She later accompanied Megumin outside on a day without school to help swindle food from villagers, during which she lived up to her identification as "the foremost devilish little sister" by succeeding where her sister failed when convincing Bukkororii to give her tons of food.[10]
Komekko proceeded to play with Kuro the day Megumin was out helping Bukkororii hit on Soketto, and received a lot of food from him when he later came asking her to go to his home after she grew up.[11]
At some point during the period, Komekko received from Bukkororii his book A Certain Necro's Note which she stuffed into her home's storeroom,[12] and also accepted him treating her to various foods despite Megumin's misgivings, while also wondering whether her sister or the NEET was stronger.[13] She also tried applying to join the party of the visiting Mitsurugi who gave her lots of food.[14]
Some days later, Komekko went to play at the Tomb as usual, when Servants of the Dark God, which she regarded as vicious-looking flying black chickens, overran the village at dusk's approach. Discovering several of them landing closeby with Kuro in tow, she jumped out to demand the Demons release her dinner, and managed to cow them into inaction. Komekko was next grabbed by Megumin who took her to flee back into the undergrowth while Yunyun fought the Demons with Intermediate Magic, though subsequent to expressing how she won't mind if Megumin didn't live up to wielding the strongest magic, Komekko followed her sister back to the fight. Initially hiding in the bushes for the coolest opportunity to show themselves, the little girl upon new demonic reinforcements arriving took the initiative to announce her aiding the exhausted Yunyun who had rescued Kuro. As more of the "chickens" got herded towards their position by the battling villagers, Komekko was surprised when Megumin unleashed an Explosion that wiped out the monsters, before turning disappointed because all the "chickens" were reduced to ashes. She and Kuro accordingly stood guard over the collapsed Megumin and Yunyun as the other villagers rushed to the scene, and upon her sister's awakening confessed to Megumin about playing with the puzzle at the Tomb.[15]
Meeting with the returned Host at the Tomb some time after Kuro was renamed "Chomusuke", Komekko told him the story circulated among the villagers about how the Dark God got unsealed only to be vanquished in a challenge against the unnamed goddess. Having the live hen and chick Host brought with him taken away because Komekko wanted to use them for food, she offered to show him Chomusuke only to be dismissed. The little girl was then assessed by the Demon to have potential of becoming a great mage, prompting her to work hard for summoning him to be her familiar one day before they parted.[16]
Journey to Axel Arc[]
Cuddling up to Megumin in rare instances on a few nights to hear her tell bedtime stories about the fairy tale of a lone adventurer who defeated the Devil King solo,[17] Komekko spent many days dragging her NEET sister, who couldn't find a job during daytime, back from casting Explosions in the nighttime outskirts of the village using a makeshift sleigh, though this made her sleep late on the following mornings. She however was spared this chore on the day Megumin followed Yunyun out for finding work, and instead heated up the bath upon her sister's return home that evening.[18]
Initially mistaking her sister as deciding to cook Chomusuke as tomorrow's breakfast, Komekko was impressed by Megumin clarifying during dinner that she was going to sell the cat for a fortune. Later on the following day, however, Megumin came back from Yunyun's home, telling of her plan to set out on an adventuring journey early next morning, so despite feeling glad for getting to eat all the food by herself, Komekko after listening to Megumin's many advice hoped for her to return soon, before wishing her sister luck with defeating the Devil King when the time for departing came.[19]
Irregular of Axel Arc[]
Having received Megumin's letter that was mailed from Axel, Komekko despite having swindled Bukkororii for food the previous day still claimed to Arue about being starved, and was treated to grilled sweet potatoes. She next asked Arue to read the letter out for her, but after hearing of Megumin talk of helping the Axis Order and defeating Arnes on the journey to Axel, Komekko got bored listening to her sister's list of advice for her. The little girl was next convinced by Arue to write a reply letter, though the initial draft she asked Arue to pen about how happy she was with hogging all the food in Megumin's absence was eventually scrapped. Accordingly surprising Arue with her next draft about freeloading food from Bukkororii's family much to the NEET's dismay and making friends with the "big goblin", the latter part of which ended up left out of the letter, Komekko asked to conclude with a blessing to Megumin for her to defeat the Devil King and bring his meat back for consumption purposes.[20]
Mid Spring Arc[]
When Megumin returned home with her party members, the surprised Komekko ran shouting to her parents about her sister bringing a man back, much to Kazuma's shock. She was accordingly entertained by Aqua's magic tricks, before getting enticed by the Arcan Manjus that Kazuma gifted to her family despite Aqua and Darkness shouting incomprehensible warnings, and munched on the sweet buns while watching Aqua perform more tricks. Enjoying a hot pot dinner bought by Kazuma's party that night, Komekko soon fell into satisfied sleep.[21] The following day while at home, Komekko impressedly witnessed Darkness holding off alone against a sneak attack from the Devil King's Army led by Sylvia until Kazuma arrived with reinforcements.[22]
Sleeping through the commotion caused by the Devil King's Army conducting a raid that night and Sylvia razing the village subsequent to her acquisition of the Mage-Killer, the little girl carrying Chomusuke, whom she still saw as food, was eventually evacuated by Darkness to Kazuma's side while he was setting up the Railgun. Later taken along with his party when Sylvia pursued them, she piped up to defend her sister when the Devil King's General disparaged Megumin. Then after the Railgun was charged into functionality by Megumin's Explosion and aimed towards Sylvia by Kazuma, Komekko jumped in to pull the trigger, which vanquished the Devil King's General and stole Kazuma's kill,[23] (though in the anime she had to be evacuated back to her parents' side because Sylvia returned to life merged with Beldia and Hans)[24].
Cursed Relic Arc[]
Picking up a small metallic slate with circuits printed on it when exploring the mysterious facility in the village, Komekko who took it back home as her treasure later showed it to Aqua in return for the tricks she performed when Kazuma's party visited the village again. The little girl however flatly refused to hand the slate over to Kazuma upon him and his party requesting it, unless Megumin displayed once more how cool her Explosions were.[25]
The next morning out in the forest, Komekko was unimpressed with the explosions Megumin and the others displayed to her, before Kazuma's party fought off an attacking Mecha Owl Monster. While the party reported the incident to Hyoizaburoo that night, the anticipating Komekko was promised by Megumin to exhibit her coolness through defeating the constructs. Thus during the party's expedition on the following day into the decayed fort from which the Mecha Owl Monsters were coming from, she insisted on tagging along, forcing Megumin to spend the whole trip carrying her instead of fighting.[26]
Later as the party pushed into the depths of the facility ruins beneath the fort and discovered the deactivated Mage-Killer Prototype, Komekko thinking that it'll be cool thumped it in hopes the construct would activate. Then when Kazuma was trying to stop Aqua and Megumin from pressing an irresistible big red button on the wall, she went ahead to push it instead, and ended up activating the Mage-Killer Prototype, which Megumin had to carry her fleeing from. Subsequent to the party making it into the forest with the damaged construct still pursuing them, Komekko encouraged her sister to take it out. Set down on the ground before Megumin managed to prepare her relearned Explosion, Komekko was accordingly impressed by the fireworks that destroyed the Mage-Killer Prototype, thus she handed over the slate as promised.[27]
