Red Stream Explosion! (レッドストリーム・エクスプロージョン！, Reddo Sutorīmu Ekusupurōjon!) is the third special OVA episode of the KonoSuba anime and the first bonus stage episode of Season 3, which covers the special short story booklet that came along with the blu-ray disc box set of Season 2 and was later published in Volume 2 of the Detour light novel anthology series.
Synopsis[]
The annual quieting a rampaging storm spirit rolls around, and this time Kazuma's party takes the spotlight.
Plot[]
While conflicts over pudding and bubbly are respectively going on between the lunching Megumin and Darkness as well as Kazuma and Aqua at the dining hall of the Guild, Luna approaches asking for them to perform a job, then clarifies to the smugly posing Kazuma how she is in fact requesting the help of Megumin. Soon expressing incredulity at the receptionist's absurd request for the Arch Wizard to take out a storm currently on its way towards Axel, Kazuma instead finds himself seen as an idiot by the native inhabitants, since as Aqua quickly explains the storms in this world are actually caused by the rampaging Great Spirit of Storms whom adventurers have to pacify every year.
The other adventurers led by Sakamaki and Morgan then come cheering for Megumin to use her Explosion that can harm spirits, only for the Crimson Demon to refuse because on the other days they had considered her a troublemaker. She soon turns arrogant from all the adventurers apologising for their misdeeds and praising her prowess, but upon hearing somebody confessing to have came up with her nickname "crazy explosion girl", furiously tussles with him. Kazuma proceeds to point out the lonesome Yunyun as the other Arch Wizard they can request in place of the reluctant Megumin, much to the now ignored latter's shock. With the loner enthusiastically agreeing to the request as well as proposals of inviting Wiz to help out being brought up by Darkness, Megumin subsequently stopped by Aqua from tussling with Morgan over his praise of Yunyun, finally has to apologise for her conceit and beg to be included.
Two days later, Luna in a broadcast warns the townsfolk to barricade themselves indoors against approaching strong winds until the resting storm is stopped by the adventurers, who except for Aqua and the perplexed Kazuma are all heading out in their swimwear because the Great Spirit of Storms is located near bodies of water. The Japanese reincarnate anyhow marvels at the sight of the sexy Wiz and Yunyun clad in swimwear, followed by Darkness covering the embarrassed pair up in her cloak so that she herself can bask in the attention of the men looking at her in sexy swimwear. Kazuma next hears from Sakamaki how every year the male adventurers managed to convince the female adventurers into wearing swimsuits for this, in addition to anticipation that the three powerful wizards accompanying this year will deal enough damage on the Great Spirit for the resulting gust of wind being strong enough to blow the swimsuits off the female adventurers, just like what happens to the bikini top worn by one of them, prompting Kazuma to join the other men in referring to the Great Spirit with respect.
Finally reaching the lake where the Great Spirit of Storms situated at its centre has summoned several tornadoes around her, Kazuma peering from the shore alongside Aqua and the others is surprised to see the spirit commonly associated with water taking the form of a screaming degenerate woman. The Goddess of Water anyhow floats herself up to the spirit related to her authority, and attempts to placate the Great Spirit's rage with divinely words, only to be blown all the way back to shore by her powerful gust. Enraged, Aqua again charges into the lake to get at the Great Spirit, while the other male adventurers also follow her in, despite many of them getting blown away during their attempt to divert the spirit's attention from the female spellcasters in the water.
Inspired by the bravery of the male adventurers all for the sake of the key moment, Kazuma hoping to see the real thing instead of through the Succubi's service strips down to his underwear and jumps into the lake too. Catching up to Megumin who fails to swim close enough to the Great Spirit for casting an Explosion, he tells her head back ashore and start chanting until the spirit is led into range. As Kazuma next stops for Darkness who clutches at driftwood because she cannot swim well, the two of them witness Yunyun and the other male adventurers panickedly swimming back towards the shore, since Aqua starting an argument with the Great Spirit has made the storm much worse than usual, so Kazuma tells the others to wait on the shore while he goes to collect the idiot.
As Aqua yells at the Great Spirit but soon loses it to the retorts spoken in the spirits' language, the approaching Kazuma upon realising the goddess' ability to communicate with her, instructs Aqua to call the Great Spirit an old bar hag. He soon clutches onto Aqua as the Goddess of Water swims for their lives from the pursuit of the enraged spirit back towards the spellcasters who have already made their preparations. Crashlanding onto the shore and telling the hesitant Megumin to cast all their spells at once on the Great Spirit instead of killing her off, Kazuma with the help of other male adventurers finally convinces the Crimson Demon to launch their attacks alongside the other two Arch Wizards, in addition to talking Darkness into standing guard up front. Under the expectant eyes of Kazuma and other male adventurers, Yunyun opens up with a Lightning Strike, followed by the Explosions of Wiz and Megumin.
Picking themselves out of the sand after the shockwave, the male adventurers who ignore the puzzled Megumin are overjoyed to see the Great Spirit having survived and reverted back to a pacified state. Subsequent to Aqua who serves as the translator explaining how the spirit needs to find somewhere for releasing her pent-up magical power every year, Kazuma and the other men gleefully wait for the Great Spirit to reward them with the gust that strips the female adventurers, only for the clueless Aqua to stop it with Sacred Break Spell. Unaware of how the male adventurers are gravely disappointed, the goddess anyhow translates the Great Spirit's message about returning the next year, something Kazuma and the other men beg on their knees for her to do.
Back at the Guild some hours later, Luna congratulates the adventurers celebrating there for their efforts at preventing damage to the city, though as Wiz lauds Megumin for the improvement in her Explosion, Darkness points out to Aqua how all of the adventurers present are females, little knowing that Kazuma and all the other male adventurers are standing in a two-hour long line at the Succubus Cafe.

Differences to other versions[]
- The anime omits the part about Darkness and Aqua getting excited about being requisitioned for a job by Luna as well as the explanation regarding increased monster activity also an aspect of potential storm damage, but adds in the conflicts over food and drink between the party members.
- Morgan and Sakamaki are anime-original characters who take up the roles of some unnamed adventurers in the light novel.
- In the light novel, Aqua expresses disgust over Kazuma leering at the sexily-clad females, while Darkness wears a white swimsuit and brings a swim tube with her.
- The parts in the light novel about Kazuma finding the sight of the adventurers travelling in swimsuits unnerving, the explanation regarding the school swimsuits worn by the bickering Megumin and Yunyun being the "traditional water-resistant suits" of the Crimson Demons, rain falling prior to a female adventurer losing her bikini top, and the middle finger raised by the Great Spirit after blowing Aqua back to shore, are all omitted in the anime.
- Aqua stays ashore in the light novel until getting blown down by the gust of the Great Spirit, and simply swims up to the spirit like common people do instead of making the nearby water solid enough to stand on as in the anime.
- Kazuma in the light novel, who notices the Great Spirit letting the magic cast by other female adventurers hit her, ends up dragging the distressed Darkness clutching onto her swim tube all the way to the shore, before he jumps back into the lake for luring the Great Spirit over, until he changes his goal to collecting the arguing Aqua after hearing about the idiot from Yunyun, who retreats alongside Wiz and other adventurers.
- While the anime adds Aqua's crashland into the sand and Kazuma's acrobatic somersault towards Megumin, it on the other hand omits Megumin's idea of having Yunyun attack the Great Spirit in order to placate her before killing the spirit off with a surprise Explosion.
- The parts after the adventurers' return to Axel are all anime-original features.
Trivia[]
- This episode occurs roughly during time period of Season 2, since Darkness had undergone training to improve her swimming by the time of the first PS4 visual novel game, although in the OVA Megumin already got the Explosion Magic Increase skill, what happened in the movie final.
