Summary[]

Megumin finds Kazuma reading at the Guild a storybook regarding Khiel, a mage who fell in love with a noblewoman before becoming the most powerful Archwizard of the kingdom, with Darkness then filling in about Khiel later rumoured to have kidnapped the noblewoman into a nearby dungeon now used by novice adventurers for training. While Megumin and Darkness decline from going there respectively because of the inability to use Explosion inside and the lack of strong opponents, Kazuma tells Aqua how Chris whose Thief class is perfect for exploring dungeons has just gotten busy lately from picking up after her old mentor. He then decides to venture into the dungeon alone using some new Skills Chris and Keith had taught him, where he can grab whatever valuable he can find before retreating, and asks his companions who call the behaviour burgling to protect him on the way to the dungeon.

At the entrance to Khiel's Dungeon, Kazuma bids farewell to Megumin and Darkness before proceeding into the dark dungeon alone, utilising the Thief Skills of Sense Foe and Ambush for avoiding enemies and Second Sight for night vision. Dodging some Gremlins as he thinks of Eris, Kazuma is surprised to find that Aqua has followed him, since Undead like an attacking Zombie which she casts Turn Undead on can render Ambush useless. Later hearing from Aqua about her ability see clearly in the dark, Kazuma realises that she could clearly see what he was secretly doing back in the stables at night.

A horde of Undead including Skeletons, Ghosts, and more Zombies subsequently crowd around them, whom Aqua repeatedly purifies. As Kazuma gets tired of all the Undead, Aqua against his warning falls for an Imitation Dungeon that snaps her up. After she drags herself out of its slimy interior, a trap wall opens, from which a Lich emerges.

Inviting the Kazuma and Aqua into his chamber, the Lich introduces himself as Khiel. After indicating the remains of his dead wife, Khiel recounts how as a noblewoman she was married to be another one of the king's concubines only to get mistreated, until she accepted his proposal and joined him on the escape from the kingdom's pursuers. Khiel then asks to be purified so he can go join her, which Aqua does by summoning a magic circle to cast Sacred Turn Undead like an actual goddess.

Leaving with Khiel's treasure, Kazuma realises that Khiel and all other Undead in the dungeon were awakened because of Aqua's presence, so using Ambush he ditches her as more Undead attack.

Characters[]

Differences to other versions[]

  • Kazuma reading about the tale of Khiel as known by the public and later discussing it with Megumin and Darkness is a manga-only feature.
  • In the light novel, Megumin and Darkness wait at a log house near the dungeon entrance for the return of Kazuma and Aqua, the latter of whom follows the former inside anyways, despite him wanting to go alone.
  • The manga omits the parts about Kazuma using a potion that hides his scent, as well as him leaving behind marks so he won't get lost.
  • Aqua in the light novel sends the soul of a deceased adventurer on the verge of turning into Undead to the afterlife, before taunting Kazuma for panicking at the corpse.
  • Instead of managing to avoid a wandering Gremlin, Kazuma has to fight and defeat one in the light novel after a misunderstanding Aqua responds to his gestures warning about the monster's presence with party tricks and ends up attracting its attention.
  • The Imitation Dungeon in the light novel doesn't gobble up Aqua but the empty potion vial that Kazuma tosses to reveal its true form.
  • In the light novel, Aqua discovers and drops through the hidden entrance to Khiel's chamber.
  • The part about the ditched Aqua managing to break through the onslaught of Undeads and out of the dungeon, albeit getting traumatised by both, back to the log house where Kazuma is explaining what happened down there to the others, is also omitted in the manga.
