Summary[]
Kazuma refuses Megumin's request to go hunting monsters outside town without taking quests since it will not earn them money, and points out how she is purely itching to try out her new magic rod made of manatite to cast Explosions.
He flashes back to when Aqua complained to the Guild's receptionist lady about the meagre rewards from the Cabbage harvest, and heard that it was because the vegetables she had brought back were all cheap Lettuces that had mixed in with the Cabbages. Aqua proceeded to beg from Kazuma who had made a small fortune from the harvest into paying her debts with the Guild Hall, and upon failure spills out how he secretly relieves himself in the stables at night. She then discovered that all of the weak monsters had gone into hiding, leaving only extremely difficult quests available, all because one of the Demon King's Generals stationed himself in a castle nearby.
With Aqua working to pay off her debts as a waitress and Darkness temporarily heading back to her home for training, Kazuma agrees to accompany Megumin on her exercise of practising Explosion far from the town where the guards won't yell at her for the cacophony, so that he can carry her back when she collapses due to using up her power. They then discover an abandoned castle, which Megumin selects to be her target, thus during the subsequent weeks Megumin will cast an Explosion at the castle everyday, while Kazuma will grade it before carrying her back to the town.
One day when Kazuma discusses Explosion with Megumin, the Guild asks all adventurers to gather at the town gate, where Beldia the Dullahan, who is one of the Demon King's Generals, bellows his rage at some fool casting irritating Explosions outside his castle every single day. With the other adventurers looking at her, Megumin steps forward to own up before bragging about being the number one wizard in town, and consequently starts a yelling contest with Beldia who simply wants her to stop casting Explosions.
Aqua still dressed as a waitress then jumps out to tell Beldia off for impeding her work, yet before she can do anything, Beldia casts a Premonition of Death at Megumin so she will die after a week, only for Darkness to be hit with the curse when she rushes between them. Beldia proceeds to laugh at the turn of events, yet turns disturbed when Darkness fantasizes about him blackmailing her into all kinds of shameful play while Kazuma holds her back. The Dullahan then declares that he will undo the curse if Megumin can reach him at the castle guarded by his Undead minions, and after he leaves Megumin and Kazuma becomes determined to raid the castle, only for Aqua to break the curse on Darkness herself with Sacred Dispel, dumbfounding Kazuma and Megumin on top of baffling Beldia later on when nobody comes.
Characters[]
Differences to other versions[]
- The manga skips the part about Kazuma's conversation with other adventurers about a Demon King's General occupying a nearby castle and his attempts at eating an elusive vegetable stick, as well as him having to pay off Aqua's debt.
- Megumin in the light novel initially tries shifting the blame of the daily Explosions onto another wizard girl.
- The one who tells Beldia off for scaring the weaker monsters into hiding in the light novel is Megumin instead of Aqua.
