A Big-Game Hunt for This Pitiful Heroine! (この残念ヒロインのために大物モンスター狩りを!, Kono Zannen Hiroin no Tame ni Oomono Monsutā Gari wo!) is the sixty-eighth chapter of the KonoSuba manga series, and covers Chapters 1 to 2 in Volume 7 of the light novels.

Summary[]

When everybody is eating dinner at the mansion, Aqua asks Kazuma to feed her because she is busy applying heating magic on the egg. Just as Kazuma squabbles with her over it, a rude servant of Alderp barges in looking for Darkness, who right away lividly follows him to see the lord. Megumin and Kazuma subsequently express their puzzlement at Darkness obediently abiding by the lord's summons, but Aqua is instead overjoyed at getting to eat Darkness' dinner, to Kazuma's exasperation.

The next day, Kazuma brushes Chomusuke while asking if she is actually a pretty cat-eared girl. Darkness who got him worried by staying out all night then bursts in, hurriedly petitioning him to accept a good quest she had found at the Guild. Explaining that she only went back to her family residence last night, she proceeds to explain about the quest against the Kowloon Hydra, which is a powerful monster soon to awake from its ten-year slumber under a lake close to Axel. Kazuma however is reluctant to go after such a strong adversary, and Darkness after claiming to be settling some nobility business last night hears of Megumin, who was also worried about her, having gone shopping with Aqua for dragon collars. Darkness continues to pester Kazuma into subjugating the Kowloon Hydra which may threaten the town, and with him refusing to fight now that he is rich, promises to reward him with a kiss if he emerges victorious, only to be taunted for its lack of value, to the point she frenziedly attacks Kazuma as Megumin and Aqua return.

Kazuma ends up having to join the eager Darkness and Megumin on the quest, and in response to his concern over what to do if they fail to defeat the Hydra, Darkness explains that the kingdom will like in the past send knights to wear it down until it has to go into slumber again, though she prefers to outright kill the monster off for good. Meanwhile, Kazuma drags along the reluctant Aqua wailing about her need to hatch Emperor Zel who had been put in the care of Wiz's Shop, since they need her help to lure the Hydra out.

At Kazuma's suggestion, Aqua floats on the lake like a corpse, so that her purification of the water will incite the Kowloon Hydra into appearing, before answering the other girls' queries about her exceptional powers by citing her proclamation as a goddess. They soon detect the magical power of the Kowloon Hydra when it surfaces towards Aqua's location, so Kazuma gives instructions for battle while she swims back to shore, only to be surprised by the monster's size being more comparable to a mansion instead of a house as they had been expecting.

Eris later taunts Kazuma for his pitiful death just for the heck of imitating the famous game over line, now that she has become used to him visiting, and goes on to inform him of Darkness jumping into the Kowloon Hydra's stomach for retrieving his swallowed body back to the safe spot where the others had taken refuge at. Kazuma then grumbles about the Hydra regenerating the heads it had lost to Explosion, before it swallowed him and rendered 30% of his body gone according to Eris.

After asking for Kazuma to forgive Darkness, who has her own reasons for selecting the quest, Eris as she displays kindheartedness towards the deceased Kazuma thanks him for his help with the Divine Item. Kazuma who wishes for Eris to see him in action then asks if she had visited Axel when sneaking to the mortal world, at which she surprises him by revealing that she had already met him many times previously.

Trivia[]

  • The taunting monologue that Eris utters upon Kazuma's death is derived from the game over line in Dragon Quest Ⅱ.
