Our Mascot's True Identity (マスコットの正体は…, Masukotto no Shōtai wa...) is the seventy-third chapter of the KonoSuba manga series, and covers the Toranoana bonus short story in Volume 6 of the light novels.

Cover[]

While in the bath, Kazuma reminiscing on his encounter with Wolbach contemplates making another trip to Arcanletia.

Summary[]

While watching Chomusuke nap in the mansion's yard, Kazuma asks Yunyun about what the cat truly is, and expresses skepticism over her nervous claim of Chomusuke being a normal cat. Yunyun thus diverts the subject of Chomusuke's strange antics to how she is her cute cat friend, who had travelled with her since way back in the Crimson Magic Village. Kazuma however remembers the time Chomusuke was seen howling at the full moon, and cites his Devil acquaintance's explanation about Devils and monsters becoming more powerful and excited during full moon nights, to which Yunyun claims that Chomusuke was meowing at the moon because she missed her mother.

Deciding to stop prying into it, Kazuma who too had developed a soft spot for Chomusuke suddenly witnesses her breathing flames. Yunyun who also sees it quickly ignores Kazuma's inquiries by turning to challenge an approaching Megumin, though she is instead asked to accompany on another Explosion routine.

Left behind to lie down in the yard with Chomusuke in his hands, Kazuma points out several quirks that indicate her not being a normal cat, and wonders if she is actually a general of the Demon King's Army who is out to kill him. He subsequently asks if she can talk and turn into a pretty cat-eared girl during the full moon, before rolling around frolicking with her, though this scene is witnessed by the returning Yunyun and the Megumin she is carrying.

Pressed into supplying magical power to Megumin, Kazuma explains how he was simply looking into what Chomusuke truly is, following which Chomusuke breathes out lightning to zap a passing cricket. Megumin and Yunyun proceed to deny having seen anything out of the ordinary, so the suspicious Kazuma directly asks them if they know Chomusuke's true identity. Just as Megumin and Yunyun make to leave, citing their need to practise posing, Chomusuke jumps out of Kazuma's hands to chase off a passing wild cat by breathing fire. Kazuma is then further aggravated by Megumin and Yunyun paying a deaf ear to his indications of all this, before he is surprised by Chomusuke chasing a butterfly by flying through the air.
