The Crimson-Eyed Wizards (
Plot[]
When attacked by a huge black beast appearing at a stone structure, Megumin gets saved by a mysterious woman who cast a powerful magic spell. Impressed by her power, Megumin asks her on how to become as powerful as her. The woman wonders who freed her, but then realizes its Megumin as she sees she holds the sealing stone, which Megumin states it’s her "puzzle" which she finally solved. The woman wants to repay Megumin and tells her she will grant her a wish, but as Megumin requests World Domination, but since it’s too much, she asks Megumin if she has another wish. Megumin then requests large bust like the woman but gets denied again. Megumin then requests that she teaches her the magic she used, but the woman tries to explain the magic is called Explosion and is quite dangerous and strong. However, that only excites Megumin.
Seven years later, Megumin catches some crawfish with Komekko. On their way home, they see Yunyun and Megumin decides to give her one crawfish as she sees her hunger in her eyes. Returning home, they see that their father Hyoizaburoo had come back and get excited. Her mother, Yuiyui tells Megumin that they will be having sukiyaki tonight, which makes Megumin happy as they rarely have it. During dinner, Hyoizaburoo explains that he is proud of his craftsmanship as he got a customer who understand the quality of his goods. He and his wife explain how a woman came to the market and liked one of his items. Hyoizaburoo then acted tough and told her to leave as she doesn't appreciate his items enough, but as the woman agreed that it’s really good craftmanship, Hyoizaburoo and Yuiyui where happy to sell the item to her. Yuiyui told her that the item had the ability to attract the person she is seeking. As the woman was on a journey to find someone, she got happy and Yuiyui told her they are guaranteeing her journey to be a success, which the woman took as a pact and decided to purchase it. From the money, Hyoizaburoo was able to buy them meat and a new uniform for Megumin. Megumin gets excited and explains that she intends to become a great master of explosion magic, something that surprises her parents.
At the academy, the headmaster welcomes the new students to the greatest magic academy, the Red Prison. His speech is cut short by Pucchin as the headmaster tends to talk for too long. Yunyun then approaches Megumin, stating she wanted to meet her. Even though they all are from the same village, the other students can't recall who Yunyun was. Yunyun then reveals she enrolled in the school to defeat Megumin. Megumin school days then start. One day she tells the teacher that Explosion Magic isn't in the book from which they are studying, but he tells her it’s better to not pursue learning Explosion Magic, as it’s joke magic. It’s time for their combat training. Pucchin asks Yunyun what the most important thing is when a Crimson Demon engages in combat and Yunyun explains it to remain calm and not lose your composure. Pucchin awards her five points, but states that isn't the correct answer. He then asks Megumin, who states its destructive power. Pucchin awards her fifty points, but still states it isn't the correct answer. Arue then states it’s to look cool and Pucchin confirms, giving her a hundred points. He then demonstrates it, introducing himself using Call of Thunderstorm, making the girls find him cool. Pucchin then tells the girls to split in pairs and come up with a cool way to introduce themselves with a great pose. Since they are eleven, the remaining one, Yunyun, is paired with Pucchin. Yunyun feels quite embarrassed and can't make a cool pose to introduce herself. Megumin sees that and acts like she is sick to sit out. Due to that, Arue is paired with Yunyun, and she helps her a bit on how to introduce herself.
Due to Pucchin's thunder magic, dark clouds had gathered, and it started to rain. Arue then tells Pucchin that the headmaster's tulips are escaping, so he hurriedly tells the girls to catch them, or he may get fired. They finally are able to capture all the tulips after a struggle. Megumin states that if she could use Explosion, she would have solved this with a single magic. Yunyun tells her that whatever Explosion magic is a joke, will depend on who's using it. Megumin then reminds her they are supposed to be rivals and she shouldn't be that friendly. Later, Megumin is alone and wonders if Explosion magic is indeed a joke but denies it as she had seen it with her own eyes. She reaffirms herself to learn Explosion magic and become like the woman who saved her.

Differences to other versions[]
- The part in the Anime between Megumin meeting Wolbach and her starting classes did not appear in the Light Novel.
- In the Light Novel, the academy is a simple wooden countryside school building commonly seen in rural Japan.
- Megumin goes off to sleep at the nurse's office when pretending to be sick in the Light Novel.
- The tulips in the Light Novel did not run off during the rain.
Trivia[]
- In the initial television broadcast, the opening theme was played at the ending, both because there weren't enough air time to fit in all the themes given the amount of plot. The opening and ending themes with their footages were properly placed in their right spots in the BD versions later sold.
