Plot[]

While sleeping at an inn in Axel, Megumin is waken early in the morning when a modern guy argues with a dead broke woman about them having to sleep in stables.

Megumin and Yunyun later head to the Adventurer Guild, where she enters loudly to introduce herself and draw attention, yet to her embarrassment the Guild is empty at that time of the morning. The two proceed inside looking for a bulletin board where they can find party recruitment requests and quest postings, when Luna the receptionist approaches and offers to verify their Adventurer Cards so they can start working as adventurers, but Megumin decides to let Yunyun verify first while she waits for more people to be present.

After some time, Megumin thinks that there are enough adventurers around, so she goes to Luna and loudly declares her identity as a Crimson Demon coming to verify her Adventurer Card, impressing the other adventurers within earshot. Looking at Megumin's stats on her card, Luna is amazed by her intelligence and magical power, although they are not as high as the woman from yesterday, and upon Megumin's inquiries elaborates how during the previous day she had helped register a woman with extremely high magical powers but low intelligence as an Archpriest. As Megumin walks away, a Ruffian along with other adventurers hoping to recruit her recommend that she stay away from those two newly registered adventurers, since one of them belongs to the Axis Order, while Yunyun posts her own recruitment request.

Megumin decides to join the Warrior Ryze and his Thief sister Laina on a quest for exterminating Chestnut Rats, so that they can see how well they work as a party. Yet when they are attacked by the Chestnut Rats, Megumin frantically casts Explosion to blow them up along with the surrounding chestnut tress which she later has to use all her money to pay for, while Ryze and Laina tell her as she lies down unmoving all sorts of excuses to reject her from the party. Limping back to the Guild poor as well as hungry that evening, Megumin hears the hall owner scolding the modern guy who doesn't believe the anchovies he is ordered to retrieve are grown in fields and the dead broke woman who keeps purifying the alcoholic drinks she serves into water, then as they get sacked walks off to make Yunyun who had been sitting alone all day to buy her dinner.

The next day when checking the Guild's bulletin board, Megumin sees the recruitment request from Yunyun, who is playing a chess-like game by herself, that is more of an advertisement for seeking friends. She then sees a quest with a nice reward that entails searching for a blond-haired, blue-eyed noble girl, but settles for a request that seeks a Mage for a party member. Later while Ein and his party brief her in the woods, a blond-haired female Crusader covered in slime and her accompanying silver-haired Thief walk past on their way back from seeking out the Demon recently seen in the vicinity. Soon afterwards, Megumin defeats the Mega Slime Ein's party runs into with one Explosion, but during the subsequent celebration at the Guild where Ein expresses how impressed he is with her, Megumin confesses about her being able to use only one magic once a day and how she isn't interested in learning Intermediate Magic, so Ein tells her that she needs to join some other party.

On the dejected Megumin's way back to the inn, she passes by a banana stall surrounded by spectators who are impressed by how the dead broke woman made a load of bananas disappear, though upon discovering that the bananas have disappeared for good, her modern guy companion calls her a useless goddess before the stall owner sacks them both. Returning to her and Yunyun's room, the two of them play a chess-like game as she recaps how she was kicked out by the party she quested with. Yunyun next tells about a fishy man the same age as her dad but claiming to be her age approaching to join her, which Yunyun declines despite liking to talk with him. Soon afterwards, Yunyun beats Megumin at the game, only to have the unaccepting Megumin flip the board before going to sleep.

Following a week joining various parties that kick her out once their first quest is complete since there is little use for a mage who can only use Explosion Magic, Megumin in frustration casts another Explosion outside Axel's walls. The construction foreman who is annoyed that she did it again then wheelbarrows her back to town, all the while complaining about how the craters she makes require a lot of work to fill. As the modern guy in a jersey and the useless blue-haired woman who whines about their new laborious job cart in dirt to fill the craters, Megumin explains how she cannot practice her Explosion further away from town or monsters attracted by the cacophony will eat her up while she is immobile. The foreman then recalls that an impoverished shopkeeper in town can also use Explosion Magic, so Megumin, who thinks the shopkeeper was the busty mage she met as child, decides to turn herself into proper adventurer before going to see her.

Upon Megumin returning to the Guild, the other adventurers rush towards the bulletin board to tear down all of their party recruitment notices. Catching one girl who is a bit slow, Megumin manages to grab her notice and read how it seeks a mage in a perfect fit for her, yet the girl insists that the position is already taken. Megumin becomes riled at how everyone is discriminating against Explosion Magic, at which Luna comes in to scold her, telling her that she needs do it outside if she plans on fighting someone.

Megumin then sees a plump man begging Yunyun for a date, which Yunyun accepts under pressure, before Megumin knocks the man out and yells at Yunyun for getting ensnared by the lies these wierdoes sprout out. When asked if other weirdoes had asked her for bizarre requests, Yunyun recalls an old man who is always day drinking asking her to call him "Daddy" in exchange for some allowance, though Yunyun declined and instead gave him some of her money. Further horrified when the lonely Yunyun produces a conversion form for the Axis Order she was handed, Megumin determines that Yunyun who is aching for companionship will get into trouble if left alone, so with issues finding a party and money herself, she suggests that they form a party for a while. Yunyun initially quarrels with Megumin, since she had soon after Arnes' defeat declared how they should not be in the same party, but upon hearing that they need to earn some money or will end up sleeping in the stables soon, the both of them ask Luna as she comes up to break the fight for work.
