Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! Wiki

The Magic Academy's Taboo (魔法学校(まほうがっこう)禁忌(タブー), Mahō Gakkō no Tabū) is the second episode of the KonoSuba Bakuen anime, which covers Chapters 1 to 2 in Volume 1 of the light novels, or Chapter 1 to Chapter 3 of the manga.

Plot[]

Yunyun and Megumin visit a small trinket street shop. While Yunyun is looking at the items all excitedly, Megumin is surprised that she wanted to go shopping for trinkets with a friend. Yunyun ends up really liking a dagger. Later at school, Yunyun shows the dagger that Megumin brought her. Megumin explains that she brought one that looks better to her as Yunyun was taking too long to decide. Megumin then stands up, guessing that Yunyun will say it’s time for their duel. She then places her hand on Yunyun's desk and asks her to use her dagger and stab between Megumin's fingers as quickly as possible. She gives her ten seconds to stab between all fingers or it will be her loss. Yunyun doesn't wish to do it and states she will admit defeat today as well and give Megumin her lunch as well.

At home, Megumin is welcomed by Komekko, who states that she defeated the newspaper guy again and found a toy. She then smells something nice and Megumin reveals that she got her lunch offering. Seeing the lamb sandwich that previously belonged to Yunyun, Komekko gets excited and states they should save the dinner she caught for tomorrow. While Komekko heads to get what she caught, Megumin wonders if she caught some bug, however she gets surprised when Komekko brings a black cat. Komekko explains that she defeated it and at first it fought back, but after biting it, it gave up. Megumin explains to Komekko that she shouldn't bite things and asks if she can have the cat and Komekko agrees.

The next day, Megumin takes the cat to the academy and states it’s her familiar. The girls are impressed and charmed at how innocent and cute the cat looks but fear it will steal their lunches. They wonder if the teacher will allow her to have it and Megumin tries to tell him it’s her familiar, but Pucchin doesn't believe her as she still can't use magic. Megumin then states it’s a fragmented aspect of her soul and if they get separated it will go berserk and grow gigantic. Pucchin finds her story to find good and accepts it, awarding her 10 points. Pucchin then reveals they will be having a special lesson. The seal on one of their village's tourist attractions is weakening and caused the monsters in the area to become more active. The strong monsters have been dealt with, but there are some weak ones left. They need to split into groups and participate to raise their level.

After forming groups, Pucchin waits for them outside and tells them to enhance their strength with magic and pick a large weapon. Yunyun finds out that the weapons are hollow and thus quite light, which makes Pucchin award her with minus five points. Pucchin then uses Freeze Bind on a lizard monster, explaining its almost defeated by his magic, but the girls need to finish him off to level up. Megumin decides to go first. She prepares to slay it, but the lizard ends up freeing itself and jumps on her. She ends up fighting him for a while, but finally defeats him. Next is a small rabbit monster, but seeing how cute it is, no one wants to do it. They tell Yunyun to go next as she is the second in ranking, but she is unable to do it as well. Megumin then tries to force her, but Yunyun still refuses.

A large gargoyle then shows up and as it’s quite a dangerous monster, the girls get scared and start running. They jump over a hole, from which somebody casts Burning Flash and defeats the monster. Megumin is then surprised to see Bukkororii in the hole. Seeing the other girls, Bukkororii introduces himself as an Arch Wizard, and wielder of advanced magic. Megumin wonders what he is doing there, and Bukkororii explains it all related to Soketto, the girl he loves. She comes to train in this forest and prefers using lighting magic, but that leaves you blinded for a moment. He dug out a hole so that she ended up falling in it and him to come and save her, however, after he dug the hole, he remembered he still can't use teleport and couldn't get out. He asks the girls to help him out, but they all find him a creep and leave, leaving him in the hole.

The girls head back to the village but find out that a group of gargoyles are attacking it. The headmaster and Pucchin then show up, assuring them it all will be fine. They are also joined by four other Arch Wizards, who are shop owners in the village. They all unleash their magic on the gargoyles and easily start defeating them. The girls are impressed by their strength, however Megumin feels their magic isn't as strong as the Explosion magic, she saw. The wizards get taken by the compliments and excited to show off their magic, they continue attacking the village. Their attacks end up completely destroying the village and they end up blaming the Dark God and the monsters for it. The headmaster gives a speech that they will overcome this trial, and, in a day, they manage to rebuild the village.

At school, as the cat still doesn't have a name, the girls keep calling it Megumin, since it’s a fragment of Megumin's soul. Megumin is annoyed, but the girls wonder if her alter ego, the cat Megumin, took Megumin's intellect and reason. Hearing that Megumin gets angry and flips the desks.

Characters[]

Differences to other versions[]

  • The trinket shop is located differently from the Light Novel.
  • The Anime omitted the parts where Komekko talks about Wiz ordering inventory from Hyoizaburoo and Megumin discovers her attempt to cook the cat.
  • Megumin didn't have to fight the lizard monster in the Light Novel.
  • In the Light Novel, the gargoyle is instead a demon servant of the Evil God, and the girls flee in different directions when it appears, while it only goes after Yunyun and Megumin who are holding the cat which Megumin soon offers up, before Pucchin defeats it with Cursed Lightning.
  • The parts with the gargoyle bonsai and Bukkororii are Anime-original scenes.
  • In the Light Novel, the villagers' battle with the gargoyles was lightly described, and did not involve them destroying the village in the process.
