The Raison d'Etre of an Explosive NEET (爆裂(ばくれつ)ニートの就職活動(レゾンデートル), Bakuretsu Nīto no Rezondētoru) is the sixth episode of the KonoSuba Bakuen anime, which covers Chapters 1 to 2 in Volume 2 of the light novels, or Chapter 7 to Chapter 9 of the manga.

Plot[]

Megumin goes looking for a job so she can earn the teleportation fee to Arcanletia, yet she is unable to find one, because some people like Chekera who are afraid she may blow up their store don't want to hire her. Bukkororii later tells her to just give up and explains that he isn't looking for a job himself, because a battle that will require his talent will soon come and he needs to improve himself. As he leaves, he tells her that if she needs help with anything, except money, she can ask him, since both are NEETs, something Megumin refuses to accept. Upon returning home, Komekko asks for food and adds to her stress, so Megumin goes into the woods and casts an Explosion to relieve some of it.

In the morning, Yunyun comes and scolds Megumin for the Explosion, and initially Megumin tries to deny the accusation since the villagers thought it was the work of the Devil King's Army. but she ends up confessing. With Megumin struggling to find a job, Yunyun decides to help her out. They try working as waitresses, ingredient gatherers, and potato harvesters, but end up failing on all of them. Frustrated that she can't earn enough money to leave the village, Megumin invites Yunyun on a "date", in which they go into the forest where Megumin uses Explosion to let off some steam, before asking Yunyun to carry her back as she can't move. Bukkororri then shows up, hearing the explosion and guessing that the Mad Exploder must be here. He wonders what they are doing there and why is Megumin lying on the ground, so Megumin quickly makes up a story about how she saw the Mad Exploder when they were there leveling up, and following a fierce battle with them the Mad Exploder, who Megumin describes as a female demon with really big horns and a luscious body, ran away.

Yunyun carries Megumin back home where they agree to look for a job tomorrow, but as Chomusuke cozies up to Megumin after Yunyun leaves, a woman shows up at her home. Upon seeing Chomusuke, the woman bows down, stating that she finally found her mistress after hearing the seal was broken and journeying to reach this place. The woman introduces herself as Arnes and declares her will to spend her life serving and protecting her mistress, which Megumin at first misunderstands to mean herself. Arnes, despite not being aware of who Megumin is, thanks her for what she has done, and explains that she will be attending her mistress Chomusuke from now on, yet Chomusuke doesn't move as she proceeds to leave. When Megumin states that Chomusuke isn't interested since it is now a beloved member of her family, Arnes reveals how she only has 300,000 eris at the moment, an amount Megumin quickly agrees to sell Chomusuke for. With Chomusuke still refusing to leave when Megumin tells her to go with her new guardian, Arnes offers to come back tomorrow, giving them enough time to say goodbye.

The next day, Yunyun, when coming to pick up Megumin learns that she agreed to sell Chomusuke. Arnes subsequently arrives and wishes to take Chomusuke, but as Chomusuke struggles, she removes Arnes hood to reveal her identity as a high-ranked demon. Arnes then explains that she is here only for Lady Wolbach, and she won't hurt anyone if she gets her. But when explaining to the skeptical Megumin and Yunyun how demons keep their promises, Arnes starts repeating promises before collapsing.

After Arnes wakes up to Megumin and Yunyun offering her some tea, she apologizes for what happened and explains that lately she has been trapped in some bizarre energy field, which attracts men who are embodiments of trash, and she has been lied, betrayed, and had every promise to her broken. However, once she gets Lady Wolbach, it will all be fine. Yunyun states that Chomusuke doesn't want to leave, which makes Arnes question them if they are breaking another promise to her. Bukkororii then shows up, stating he felt an extremely attractive energy calling him here, at which Arnes feels the energy of an extremely trashy man. As Bukkororii wonders if she is the Mad Exploder, Megumin confirms his misconception to Yunyun's disgust. Bukkororii then calls on his crimson bestial brethren, summoning other men of the village who Arnes detects more trashy men energy from. She then runs away in horror; all the while being chased by the village men blasting at her with magic.

Deciding to keep the money Arnes had left behind for the teleportation fee, Megumin asks Yunyun if she can take care of Chomusuke, since she plans on leaving tomorrow with no intention to return, though when she defeats the Devil King and take his place, she can make Yunyun one of her generals. Yunyun though isn't interested in being a bad guy, and plans on learning advanced magic to become the village chief. After they say their goodbyes and Yunyun leaves, Megumin tells Komekko as they go to bed that if something happens she should tell the adults, and if she needs help she can ask Bukkororri who probably doesn't have anything better to do anyways, as well as visit Yunyun from time to time since she will probably be quite lonely. Komekko wishes good luck on Megumin, and tells her to become the strongest, so she can defeat the Demon King and come back home soon.

In the morning, Megumin prepares to leave at the teleport station, where her former classmates except for Yunyun gather to send her off. Funifura gives Megumin a staff as a parting gift to thank her for the medicine for her brother, who Megumin is surprised to learn had indeed been sick and not something just made up. Next, Arue gives Megumin her eyepatch, stating how it's a magic item that was helping her restrain the uncontrolled magical power she was born with, though her dream is to become a writer and write stories. However, as Megumin promises to treasure it, Arue reveals the eyepatch is just an ordinary fashionable eyepatch, regarding which she simply made up that story about. The woman staffing the station then announces that the teleportation to Arcanletia will be ready, so Megumin steps on the teleport altar, where she is sent onto her journey.

Differences to other versions[]

  • The prologue of the Light Novel where Megumin tells Komekko about the fairy tale was not included in the Anime.
  • Megumin was already dressed in her red Archwizard dress in the Anime, which in the Light Novel was gifted from Yunyun before she left the village to replace her school uniform that she had been wearing around even after graduation.
  • The part in the Light Novel where Bukkororii invites Megumin to join his vigilante team Red-Eye Dead Slayer, which Yunyun is also part of, was omitted in the Anime.
  • Chekera in the Light Novel stops Megumin from blowing up his magical cloths through magic overload just in time, whereas in the Anime it only shows the aftermath after he was too late.
  • The Anime omitted the parts about Komekko dragging Megumin back home after her initial Explosion exercises as well as Megumin talking to Komekko regarding selling Chomusuke.
  • While Megumin who talks about selling out her body in a way that makes Yunyun misunderstand didn't actually work for the potion shop in the Light Novel, she and Yunyun appeared to have sought employment there as ingredient gatherers in the Anime.
  • The part about the farmers farming by magic in the Light Novel was omitted in the Anime, which also changed Megumin into harvesting potatoes like Yunyun instead of the long onions in the Light Novel.
  • After Yunyun accompanied Megumin on her Explosion exercise, there was in the Light Novel a battle with Fire Drakes that got awoken before they make it back to the village and run into Bukkororii, while in the Anime they are discovered by Bukkororii on the spot soon after the Explosion.
  • Arnes gets attacked by Yunyun as soon as she was revealed to be a demon in the Light Novel, following which Bukkororii who blows a hole in the house's wall leads his vigilantes into chasing her off, unlike in the Anime where she has a friendlier reception from the girls, but is tormented by Hyoizaburoo's bracelet that attracts Bukkororii who blows a hole in the roof as well as other village men into attacking her.
  • Instead of receiving her gifts when her classmates sans Yunyun bid her farewell at the Teleport station, Megumin in the Light Novel gets them during the farewell party held by Yunyun at the chieftain house.
