The first chapter of the Kyakkou manga, which covers Chapter 1 in Volume 1 of the light novels.
Summary[]
Dust starts out by introducing himself as the one who runs Axel the Town of Beginner Adventurers, then describes Rin who chides him for causing trouble as his party's lone female, before casually going over Keith and Taylor whom he calls squalid.
He then comments with what Rin calls a delinquent face on the alcohol at the Guild's hall tasting bad ever since a new party, which had recently defeated Beldia who was one of the Demon King's Generals, arrived in town. Dust's party members proceed to tell him, who was late to the battle, how their Crusader Darkness tanked the General's attacks while smiling, how their wizard Megumin of the Crimson Magic Clan displayed awesome power, and how their blue-haired Archpriest Aqua released a torrent of water.
Irated by what he heard, Dust scoffs at that party not paying respects to he who runs the town despite Rin saying otherwise, before ridiculing their Adventurer Kazuma about how somebody with a weak Class like his managed to own a harem of fine advanced Class ladies. This is followed by a quarrel between him and Kazuma, in which they agree to switch parties for a day, something that delights Dust and, strangely, Kazuma too.
Heading out into the grassland outside town with his new companions, Dust is pondering inviting Rin into his new party, when he is shocked by Aqua suggesting they go fight a Dragon, while Darkness who is both unarmed and unarmoured bizarrely pants as she looks forward to being doused in its burning breath. Megumin next proclaims breaking the Dragon's hard scales with her Explosion Magic, but Dust steps in to say he isn't up to the challenge and proposes hunting Goblins instead, which the girls who had wanted to show Kazuma a thing or two concurs with. Then when asked the reason for teaming up with somebody of the weakest Class, the girls edgily emphasise that it wasn't because nobody else wanted them, before resolving to show Kazuma who always bosses them around how essential they are.
Dust next wants to see a show of their Skills, so Aqua demonstrates Nature's Beauty, to his exasperation. Megumin subsequently makes a weird introduction of herself, before shocking Dust with an Explosion onto an empty plain, one that contrary to him Aqua and Darkness don't find alarming. He is next appalled at Megumin lying motionless on the ground due to having used up all her magical power, while Aqua notices something dashing towards them, which to Dust's horror is a Beginner's Bane.
Darkness proceeds to grab Dust's precious sword as she prepares to strike, only to miss every single one of her attacks. Dust is further stunned when Darkness, who according to Megumin is unable to land any hits, shows pleasure at being ravaged by the beastly attacks of the Beginner's Bane. Calling for the party to flee when Darkness drops down unconscious, Dust instead finds Aqua preparing to unleash God Blow so she can make Kazuma dogeza to her in addition to treating her with bubbly, though she ends up slipping on a puddle of the feline's saliva, and panics when the Beginner's Bane starts biting on her.
Unable to watch any more, Dust drops the Megumin he had scooped up towards a direction where she cannot see what is going on. Reminiscing on an old order to wield his sword instead of a spear unless he is fighting for her or someone he really wants to protect, Dust picks up Megumin's magic rod which doesn't count, and accordingly wields it like a spear against the Beginner's Bane.
Afterwards, as he manages to drag a limp Megumin and an unconscious Darkness along with a crying Aqua back to the Guild late that night, the worn out Dust makes up his mind to apologise to Kazuma and his companions once they return, so that he can be back with his original party members.

Differences to other versions[]
- Instead of the prologue in the light novel where Dust dines with Kazuma's party sometime after the two men shared a prison cell, the manga starts off with the delinquent's simple introduction of his party.
- Rin complains about her salad lacking Tomatoes when chiding Dust at the beginning of the light novel.
- While Darkness futilely swings at the Beginner's Bane, Megumin in the light novel also explains to Dust that her defence is impenetrable.
- The manga cuts out a lot of Darkness' more unclean fantasizations when she is being ravaged and bitten on by the Beginner's Bane, but inserts the flashback of Dust before he chases the beast off with Megumin's rod.
Timeline Paradox[]
Based on Darkness citing that she was unarmed by personal choice and not because her sword was broken by the Winter Shogun, in addition to being unarmoured due to her suit of armour getting wrecked in the battle against Beldia, the spinoff seemed to have made this chapter occur in autumn soon after the defeat of the Dullahan instead of during winter like in the main series.
Trivia[]
- This chapter actually occurs later in the story timeline than the ensuing chapters, where the details of why Dust was late to the battle against Beldia are revealed.
