The fourteenth chapter of the Kyakkou manga, which covers Chapter 6 to the Epilogue in Volume 1 of the light novels.

Summary[]

Dust who had lost at paper-scissors-rock is left to stand watch while his companions and the tied up accomplice are all asleep, during which he lets Rin who is supposed to be on watch with him sleep on. He proceeds to pick up the spear of the Helmet Guy, then walks off to face the assassin observing from among the trees, the presence of whom he had noticed ever since taking out the group of men with his trap.

Despite Dust revealing that the ringleader who had hired him is now behind bars, the dangerous assassin insists on finishing his job because he had been paid in advance. Commenting on how the assassin will only invite suffering by living seriously while working on dark business, Dust ponders how wielding a spear, which he is still familiar with, for the purpose of protecting somebody he holds dear doesn't go against her orders. He accordingly exchanges skillful blows against the assassin who wields double short swords, surprising his opponent with how different he is with a spear compared to what Dust himself calls his usual true self. The assassin though confidently moves in to finish Dust with his next strike, only to be knocked unconscious when Dust lands the spear butt into his guts with a true thrust.

Later at the Guild, Dust laments how he didn't get paid for defeating the organisation because the men had gently treated the girls before quickly releasing them and thus didn't have bounties on their heads, in addition to the free service at the Succubus Cafe gone toast. Rin who has a different look on him then walks up, before Taylor surprisingly drops him a bag of money that Luna had paid the party as the Guild's apology for recommending a criminal member. The moved and overjoyed Dust immediately suggests inviting them all to drinks, yet at that moment Vanir, who had said Dust could take one magic item from Wiz's Shop for free, shows up demanding payment for the other magic items he had taken.

Dejected at being left dead broke once more while his party members tell him to go work, Dust laments over money always leaving him, to which Rin says he is hated by money. Remembering how he cannot pay his debts due that day, Dust scrambles to find a quest so the party can stay away from the town. As they set out, Dust grumbles at the fine weather, but is then hinted by a deadpanning Rin how she was awake that night to see his cool side.

Characters[]

Differences to other versions[]

  • Dust recalls in the light novel about Vanir advising him not to let his guard down against the lurking assassin, whose professional attitude reminds him of his former self.
  • The light novel also elaborates how the criminal organisation having the backing of their noble employer was one of the reasons why they were quickly freed, as well as Dust who believes that the assassin won't come bothering them again previously telling Rin about the Loli Succubus being a Wizard specialising in mind-controlling magic.
  • Prior to handing Dust the money in the light novel, Keith wonders about the Helmet Guy's identity, while Rin and Taylor are also curious about the Loli Succubus, though despite their intent of thanking the two of them and even recruiting the latter, Dust decides not to introduce the Succubus and nobleman in fear of sparking trouble.
  • In the light novel, Vanir whom Dust initially thinks had come to the Guild for the consultation booth he had previously set up helps himself not only to the delinquent's money but also his resulting negative emotions.

Trivia[]

  • The manga's image of Leonor differs to that of the light novel, since the volume which she debuted in had not yet been released at the time of this chapter's publication.

Timeline Paradox[]

Although this chapter occurs during the early spring when Kazuma's party with Wiz in tow are on their trip to Arcanletia, in the main story Vanir talks about recently opening his consultation services sometime during the ensuing summer later in the story timeline.
