Early Life[]
Coleslaw Skyrain came from a low-level noble household that was inferior to many other houses in both status and wealth, thus declining to order meals at the high-class restaurants she accompanied other nobles into were commonplace during her youth,[1] though she was eventually assigned to become Princess Iris' tutor alongside Claire.
Late Spring Arc[]
With Iris hoping to hear Kazuma tell his adventure stories because of him repeatedly defeating the Devil King's Generals, Rain joined the princess alongside Claire to the Dustiness mansion in Axel, where Darkness serving as the hostess brought Kazuma's whole party along for a dinner meeting on the following day. Rain for most part kept a low profile, and only spoke to convey the princess' words to the commoners whenever Claire was occupied. When it was time to return, Rain began chanting for Teleporting the royal trio, yet became shocked by Iris suddenly dragging Kazuma into her Teleportation and accordingly back to the royal castle.[2]
Leading Kazuma to the bedroom assigned for his use, Rain repeatedly reassured their jittery guest of honour that he hadn't been kidnapped but simply "invited", before petitioning him to indulge in the princess' first bout of egoism and become her playmate, something she was asked to inform his party members of. The retainer however began regretting it when during a day she taught the princess lessons, Kazuma distracted Iris by flying a bamboo dragonfly outside the window,[3] later followed by blowing bubbles that floated inside. With her complaints met with excuses of creating a happy study environment, Rain who got put off by Iris calling Kazuma "big brother" capitalised on the princess' guess of him giving her a test of endurance, and successfully made her concentrate on the rest of her studies. Rain later had to go looking around for Iris after she ran off immediately upon the lessons' conclusion, and found her happily smiling while displaying the gifted bamboo dragonfly that Kazuma claimed to be a magic item, a misconception the royal wizard quickly rectified.[4] Then on another day when the princess' lessons ended earlier, Rain as Kazuma told Iris over their boardgame match all sorts of wondrous existences and phenomenon in the outside world, assured the princess about most of the claims' veracity.[3]
The royal wizard was also present at Iris' side when Kazuma's party returned from their week-long stake out at Alderp's manor, and listened to them report about encountering the masked and extraordinarily powerful noble thief recently targeting crooked nobles in the royal capital.[5] When a large scale attack by the Devil King's Army occurred late that night, Rain stayed by Iris' side until the battle ended with a resounding victory for Belzerg.[6]
Following the victory banquet held on the following day, however, she was wakened late at night when an alarm sounded about unstoppable intruders heading upstairs towards the princess' bedroom on the top floor. Rain therefore accompanied Claire and Mitsurugi as well as a band of knights to stand guard on the second-highest floor, yet soon after the Silver-Haired Thief Brigade showed up, she had to thaw the ice freezing up the Swordmaster's mouth and nose courtesy of a thief wearing a mask. As the thieves weaved their way through the knights' attacks and headed upstairs, at Claire's instructions Rain prepared to unleash a spell for killing them, only to be shocked into stupor when the masked man shattered the manatite on her magic rod with an impossible Snipe. After the Wire Trap left by the thieves on the stairs leading up was eventually cut through, Rain followed the reinforcements to Iris' bedroom, where she found the princess unharmed and the thieves escaping out the window.[7]
(In the anime, initially only Rain and Claire led a band of soldiers to confront the thieves, following which the Wizard had to recharge Claire who had her power drained by the masked man. Rain then tried to cast Lightning at the masked man when he was busy fighting the soldiers, only to be Skill Binded by the silver-haired boy, then subsequent to Mitsurugi's defeat by the masked man, had to use her spells to Heal the Swordmaster too. Rain at the forefront of reinforcements soon followed Claire and Mitsurugi to Iris' bedroom where Darkness was facing off against the thieves, though she later could only watch them make their escape)[8]
While Darkness excused herself from the castle at daybreak, Rain heard Aqua explain how the divine necklace worn by Iris that she had sealed the powers of was extremely dangerous, because its effects could become permanent if one person dies during the body switch and might be abused by those with malicious intent. Next assured by Megumin regarding the issue being closed just as Darkness returned with Kazuma, the retainer wondered about the identity and motive of the thieves especially the masked man, whose prowess she expressed acclaim on, before having to stop Iris when she uncharacteristically tussled with Megumin.[9]
(In the anime, Rain heard about the dangers of the necklace from Darkness during an audience the princess and her court held with the party)[8]
After Teleporting Kazuma's party back to Axel, Rain was promised by the princess that no punishment will be enacted over her royal engagement ring getting Stolen by the thieves, and confessed relief at seeing Iris readily parting with Kazuma.[10]
Mid Summer Arc[]
Unable to stop Iris from heading to Axel in hopes of seeing Kazuma, Rain alongside Claire accompanied the princess to the Town of Beginners while indulging in her infatuation with the tale Mito Koumon from Kazuma's home country by taking on the role of "Sukesaburou". Exasperated at the other two attracting attention in the local Adventurer Guild soon after arrival and risking discovery by Kazuma who will try pestering his way back to the royal castle, the Wizard noticed Vanir whose mask was similar to the one worn by the masked thief. Unsuccessful with dissuading the princess from having the suspicious masked man become their moodmaking tour guide for the day, Rain was further distressed to see Iris successfully hiring Vanir through the money she had taken from the treasury, a matter the Wizard expected the treasurer to scold her about afterwards.[11]
Next correcting Iris' misconception of the locals living under tyranny by clarifying how Alderp had already been replaced by the honourable Dustinesses after the corrupt governor's disappearance, the retainer admonished the princess for hoping to attract Kazuma by teaching Alderp a lesson. Proceeding to be exasperated by Iris changing her goal to teaching some streetside thug a lesson in order to proclaim her identity, and seeing no signs of preying on the weak during the ensuing couple hours of sightseeing, Rain explained to the sheltered princess and Claire how the astonishing explanations by the masked man about the various sights were true.[11] They eventually happened upon Dust thuggishly hitting on a girl, regarding whom Rain tried dissuading Iris from making a scene though to no avail.[12] Suggesting for them to give up and simply visit Kazuma's mansion only to have Iris turn it down, the Wizard next became interested in Vanir's revelation about the Silver-Haired Thief Brigade hiding somewhere in Axel. The noise of a gigantic explosion in the distance however cut the conversation off, before Rain was shocked by the subsequent nonchalance expressed by the locals on top of Vanir's explanation about it being a specialty of the city.[11]
The group accordingly ran into Auleep and his guards trying to pressure a female adventurer into becoming the noble's lover only to be snubbed by her and other adventurers, so with Iris concerned over the enraged Auleep contemplating revenge on those who had shamed him, Rain made to stop the corrupt former accountant, but was surprised when Vanir dismissed the issue as a small problem that will quickly settle itself. She accordingly became amazed by adventurers fearlessly boxing in Auleep who turned out to be on the run from Darkness, in addition to the residents' lack of reaction to a warning Fireball fired at the order of the noble. The princess intending to jump into the fray once Auleep's guards drew weapons against the unarmed adventurers though shocked Rain, before turning dumbfounded by Vanir at Iris' order sweeping down the guards with one wave of hand.[11]
Later dismayed because they had to flee from pursuing police without enacting the part about Iris revealing her identity, Rain worried about the serious incident being discovered by Darkness proposed for the princess to lay low. Since Iris wanted Vanir to take her on more sightseeing, the Wizard had to furtively follow along to a small fiesta held in preparation for the upcoming Eris Appreciation Festival. Still paranoid about the incident that they were involved in still not resulting in huge disturbances by dusk, Rain became piqued by Vanir and Claire advising her to learn more common sense about Axel. Becoming curious over Vanir's identity especially when he gave the royal retinue a noble's parting, she anyhow Teleported the three of them back the royal castle.[11] It however fell to her when afterwards they needed to explain where the money used for Vanir went, and the apologetic Rain as expected ended up being chided by the treasurer.[1]
Late Summer Arc[]
Discovering the princess to have sneaked out of the royal castle one day, Rain frantically looked all over the royal capital, until Claire brought Iris back from Axel that night.[13] As the princess thereafter started frequently sneaking out of the royal castle, Rain was also one of those called to search around for her. She later accompanied Claire to the Adventurer Guild of Axel where they asked Luna for the whereabouts of Dust,[12] whom they wanted help from in order to understand the thinking of adventurers that Iris had recently been aspiring to, since their inability to find Mitsurugi in addition to Yunyun requiring a familiar face left them with no other candidate. The wizard soon became embarrassed by the knight drunkenly venting to the delinquent and Rin her stress from Iris frequently sneaking out of home as well as her infatuation with the princess, before feeling uneasy from the surrounding adventurers getting agitated by Claire's insults against the locals. Apologising to Dust on behalf of her colleague, Rain offering a rich reward successfully secured the delinquent's assistance.[1]
She accompanied Claire a few days later to rendezvous with the others, where the wizard had to remind her colleague that she needed to endure Dust's lack of etiquette towards the nobility. On the group's way out to perform quests against Giant Toads, the royal wizard upon being asked about her abilities confirmed her magical prowess, before being shocked to hear a gigantic Explosion nearby which the three locals inexplicably responded nonchalantly to. Bewildered by the craziness in the supposed Town of Beginners after Dust told them to stop panicking at such daily occurrences, she watched Claire confidently charge a knot of Giant Toads kept from hibernating by the Explosions only to be deftly gobbled up, and hesitating with casting spells in fear of hitting her colleague too resulted in Rain also sharing the same fate. Humiliatingly licked in embarrassing places while having her clothes dishevelled and turned translucent with stinking slime, Rain subsequent to rescue from Yunyun agreed to go bathe.[1]
Stripped down to her panties as she washed the slime off in the riverhead lake, the royal wizard soon found herself attacked by Goblins, which she couldn't fight without weapons and could do nothing but cover her breasts. Although Rain soon received support from Yunyun and Rin, she was accordingly infuriated by Dust who despite being tied up in the distance cheered for the monsters in hopes that they will force her into removing the hands over her breasts, until Yunyun struck him unconscious and allowed the royal wizard to finish cleaning herself and dry her clothes.[1]
Still showing distain towards the delinquent after he woke up, Rain wanting to ditch him changed her mind once Dust talked about him being the quest accepter required for collecting the rewards, in addition to how adventuring for the people as a noble may elevate her family to the level of the Dustinesses. Reluctant to return because she messed up the quests against the Giant Toads and Goblins, the wizard asked to perform more adventuring in order to experience something worthy of telling to the princess, and expressed interest in the local adventurers' suggestion of dungeon exploring at a nearby abandoned castle formerly occupied by Beldia. Impressed by the magical burnt marks left by the furious battles in the castle, which still remained despite the place having been cleaned up previously, she helped Yunyun set up afternoon tea in a meeting chamber.[1]
The socially conscious low-ranking noblewoman proceeded to strike a conversation with the bashful loner as they ate the snacks, then after Dust took out a Friendship Crystal brought along by Yunyun and set it onto the table atop a nearby cleaning rag, Rain curious about its effects poured magical power into it alongside Claire as the instructions said, only to have images depicting embarrassing moments from her past, predominantly involving the wizard's awkwardness due to financial woes, displayed for everyone to see. Next witnessing Beldia's woeful days at the castle in face of Megumin's daily Explosions also shown, she found the footage depicting the Devil King's General brought to helpless misery tactically useless.[1]
Subsequent to Rin discovering a hidden staircase leading downwards, Rain followed inside in hopes of discovering intelligence on the Devil King's Army, only to be left disappointedly speechless upon finding in the secret chamber at the end an awaiting Vanir. Further depressed by allegations of being unremarkable from the "Hachibei" whose additional identity as a merchant mystified her, the royal wizard concerned about her waistline couldn't resist the dietary snacks he put up for sale upon hearing that they don't fatten people, and throwing aside her initial worry about their addictiveness after tasting some, ended up buying a whole box of them. Rain like Dust was accordingly gifted by Vanir a mask much like the one he and the masked thief of the Silver-Haired Thief Brigade wear, which brought up concerns about Iris becoming too engrossed in Megumin's bandit band.[1]
Back at the royal castle where she and Claire approached Iris' bedroom for reporting, Rain tried on the mask which they planned on gifting the princess, only to suddenly find herself having become Dust who was sleeping at an inn while also wearing a mask. Staggering in her confusion out of the inn and to the Guild of Axel, she was met by Taylor and Keith who invited her to drinking. Soon finding herself carrying a lot of money in her purse, the usually impoverished noblewoman began enacting out her dream of treating others to meals and drinks. Yet while in the middle of partying with all the adventurers whom she had treated,[1] Rain suddenly discovered herself back within her body, which was in the process of undressing to bathe with Claire and Iris at the royal bathroom, driving the royal wizard into a daze over the strange dream.[14]
Anyhow pressed by foreign relations matters, such as word about the Kingdom of Elroad planning to cut military funding to Belzerg[15] on top of a Dragon Knight emissary arriving from the Kingdom of Brydle, Rain on the following day made another trip to Axel alongside Claire. There they met with Megumin and Yunyun at a coffee shop while Kazuma was thankfully sleeping at home, and through blackmailing the Crimson Demons with their involvement in the gigantic explosions that facilitated Iris' escapades from the royal castle, made them agree to help cheer the troubled princess up. After Rain scared Yunyun out of prying into "Illis's" identity, the retainers accordingly heard about Iris' interests in adventure stories and the tale about the former Dragon Knight banished for kidnapping his kingdom's princess, following which Rain suggested having the Dragon Knight emissary to give Iris a ride on his Dragon, only to have it vetoed by her colleague.[14]
The royal wizard on the next day busied herself with more duties, but was alarmed that night by a gigantic explosion outside the royal capital. Accompanying Claire and a band of soldiers out of the royal castle to seek and kill the culprit, Rain instead heard calls about the Silver-Haired Thief Brigade striking some noble's residence, in addition to the dietary snacks being put out for sale in limited numbers. Although Rain stopped Claire from heading towards the snack sale, she was accordingly approached by a drunken Dust, who to her horror revealed that Kazuma had also arrived at the royal capital. During the ensuing indecisive argument with her colleague about where to go for, Rain noticed the Dragon Knight emissary coming to ask about the commotion, and so apologising for the disturbance, she bid him to return to his room for resting. Unable to find the explosion culprit nor the Silver-Haired Thief Brigade afterwards, the royal wizard returned to the castle where nothing undue seemed to have occurred.[14]
