The Ruffian (荒くれ者, lit."Rough Guy") is a yet-unnamed, burly man who frequents the Adventurer Guild of Axel.

Appearance[]

The Ruffian is a very tall, well-built man. He has a rough-looking face and sports a tall mohawk hairstyle, along with a mustache and beard. His attire consists of green pants with no shirt, white bracers, rose colored suspenders, a set of shoulder armour and metal-plated shoes.

Personality[]

Ruffian is the archetype of the roughneck who usually says the adventure trope dialogues. He is usually surly and stoic, although he is also amicable and bubbly with the adventurers, usually hanging out in the Guild, although he isn't an adventurer, but actually a noble.[1]

History[]

By The Wall

In the anime, he was the first person whom Kazuma and Aqua spoke to after their arrival to the Parallel World and entrance to the guild hall, as he rudely questioned the duo about their strange clothes while he sat near the entrance with a drink. Upon hearing Kazuma declare his intent to go adventuring as well as fight the Devil King and his army, the Ruffian welcomed them before directing them to Luna at the reception counters,[2] though on the following day he also warned Megumin against joining the erratic pair.[3]

He continued to observe the growth of Kazuma and his party as they fought against and overcame various impossible odds like the Cabbages and Beldia, making all kinds of commentary monologues on the way.[4][5] The Ruffian was also seen as a patron of the Succubus Cafe during Kazuma's first trip to the shop,[6] and helped carry Megumin around after she was spent casting her first Explosion on the Destroyer.[7]

Subsequent to Kazuma's arrest by Sena, the Ruffian also joined those spectating his trial.[8] Monitoring how Kazuma later fought his way out of his predicament,[9] he witnessed the birth of a legendary adventurer as he ran into Kazuma receiving his new sword at a blacksmith.[10] When the party left Axel for Arcanletia, the Ruffian saw them off at the city gate,[11] before commenting from afar following their return from the City of Water and the Crimson Demon Village.[12][13] He also hung around the Guild giving comments about the locations Kazuma and his companions would head for during their adventures surrounding the magical stones and the cursed relic.[14][15]

Hearing one day Kazuma whinging at the Guild about becoming a monk, unlike his party members the Ruffian encouraged him to try out different things while he was still young.[16] Present too at the Guild when Kazuma's party was awarded the rewards from vanquishing Sylvia, the Ruffian's secret status also allowed him to naturally dine at a high-class restaurant where the up-and-coming Kazuma and Aqua once made a scene at,[17] as well as receive an invitation from Alderp for attending the wedding ceremony between the governor and Darkness,[1] though afterwards he went back to hanging around at the Guild.[18]
